Back in 2016 when the Porsche 911 R broke cover, GT boss Andreas Preuninger said of it, “It’s a car just for a fun day.†Typical German understatement, the same way they claimed they ” … still looks with pride at the honorable record of the Hindenburg and her crew” after their dirigible had an uncharacteristically rough landing. To me, the 911 R is up there with the GT3 RS 4.0 in terms of the best 911s made in the past 20 years and would without a doubt look to own one if I could afford one. That seems unlikely given what they are currently selling for, though…

This is example is one of the launch color combinations with the red stripes and side graphics, as well as the brown sport bucket seats with houndstooth inserts. It is important to note that this one was not ordered with any kind of radio, infotainment, or navigation. There is just a giant hole in the center console. While I enjoy listening to engine sounds as much as the next person, I do also like some when driving on the highway. It has just 2,300 miles, which is pretty low but not the lowest out there.
This one is priced at $490,000, which seems high given we saw a similar example under 1,000 miles sell for $50,000 less a few months ago. Not a small amount by any means, but still provides an example that these are still well over $400,000.

That “giant hole” on the center stack will never have a screen fail, create electrical gremlins nor look outdated.
I have no interest in long-term ownership of anything with a screen.
I think it’s a glorious “delete.”
Definitely out of my league but I’d rate the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 and 997.2 GT2 RS as the top collectible water cooled 911s as they are the last of the Mezger powered cars. The 991 911R is up there, and definitely more usable as a street car (as if they are ever driven) , but it’s partially overshadowed by the fact that the 991 GT3 Touring is essentially the same car mechanically but sells for far less. Ideally I’d take one of each.
these have gone up quite a bit…about 3 yrs ago they were low 300s…and in any event a slightly later model 911 Carrera T gives 90% of the enjoyment at 20% or less of the price.
$50K more than a recent comp but c’mon, it has a clean CARFAX
