The Porsche 996 is arguably the best deal going in the rear-engined Porsche world. I say arguably because there are many who utterly detest the water-cooled replacement for the venerable air-cooled 911. On top of the revision in power, the 996 power unit has come under scrutiny for potential failure of the intermediate shaft bearing. But let’s be honest for a second; Porsches are expensive cars that can be very expensive to maintain, regardless of chassis and configuration. And in terms of driving experience, the 996 was quite fun. It was not the fastest or wildest version of the 911, but in two-wheel drive Carrera form it was great fun. I was lucky enough to drive a brand new 40th Anniversary Carrera around a race track, and though it was certainly a road-biased machine, the brakes, suspension, transmission and importantly engine and soundtrack were a stirring experience. Add some real track-dedicated modifications to one, then, and it should be a great dual-purpose weapon:

2001 Porsche 911 Carrera 2
The perfect mix of Weekend Toy and Daily Driver is this 996. Started life as a collector owned c2 until 2007 when the car was purchased by its last owner at The Collections Pre-Owned department and decided that for the money he could find anything with this performance, handling, braking, and classic 911 body lines. As you can tell this is a serious neck breaker…
This 911 still retains it original beautiful Lapis Blue paint… for a car that was tracked its shows little evidence of it ever being so, literally a 9/10 and interior is mint. small scruff on the back bumper due to backing up into a stop sign. Looks like a racecar but has all the mannerisms of a street car. Everything works as it should… A/C, Radio, all power options etc. It also has a clean Car Fax and autocheck!
Factory aero package / suede headliner / xenons litronics / full leather / always serviced at the collection in miami by the first owner.. second owner who did the mods was a diy’er being he was a Porsche tech and a dedicated Pcar fanatic.

To me, this is a nice build because it’s left the motor alone and instead focused on safety and suspension. The color is also gorgeous and the condition of the car overall appears to be very good. I’d paint the matte bits the correct color and de-black the rear wheels; otherwise, I really love the look. This car looks like a streetable Cup Car. Now, one could argue that you could buy a real Cup car, and long term it might be a better investment in terms of appreciation. However, in terms of being able to drive the car to the track and push the car on a more affordable budget, the regular Carrera makes a lot more sense. $28,500 sounds like a lot for a 996, and it is. But a clean, track-ready unit with factory bits and lower miles? You could have this, or a brand new BRZ. Sure, it might explode and depreciate, but you could sure have a lot of fun on the ride.

Wow, those headlights look terrible. Are they supposed to look that way – have they been purposely tinted yellow?
@Dallas, almost certainly laminex film application. The yellow lights are popular and a nod to the factory racing Porsches that use them.
i like the residential street acceleration runs lol
hopefully theyve already addressed the IMS
Who knows how hard its been beat on. The wing just looks cartoonish as a daily driver too. Unless you’re looking for a track car pass.
There are plenty of 2001’s which can be had for a much better deal.
