Last week I took a look at a very interesting 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo that garnered some discussion and even some people saying they really like it. Outside of the optional and very expensive carbon ceramic brakes, it looked like a pretty standard 997 Turbo. Then you peeked inside the windows and knew this wasn’t your typical example that dentist in the nice part of town leases every three years. No standard black leather here, this was Palm Green. Granted, a very subdued green, but still not something you’ll see everyday nor, for that matter, almost ever. Personally, I loved it. Give me the slightly-wild color combos everyday.

Wouldn’t you know, our friend at Switch Cars just happened to have another 997 in a seemingly restrained exterior color but a wild interior. Brace yourself, this one is a little bit more loud than Palm Green.

2018 Volkswagen Golf R Color Spektrum Program

We here at GCFSB are fans of colorful rides. And we’ve certainly seen our fair share of Porsche PTS rides or BMW’s Individual paint work. Audi even comes to the pages occasionally with its Exclusive program, or Mercedes-Benz and its designo tones. But if you’re a VW fan? Well, until recently, you were pretty hard up. But in 2018 Volkswagen announced it would do fans a solid and offer its range-topping Golf R with their Color Spektrum Program which would give you the choice of not one, not two, but some 40 different shades.

Of course, there’s a catch. The Golf R is already pretty pricey at $40,000 with few options. Tack on the Spektrum option and you’re paying another $2,500….and…..waiting. Few of these cars were ordered, meaning that if you really want one you either need to pony up or be very lucky. But an ’18 in the fetching but oddly-named ’91 Blue’ came up for auction with a seemingly very low entry price. What’s the rub?

Popular wisdom would suggest that modifying a car will never be rewarded in improving its desirability. After all, they are personal expressions of automotive passion, and passions vary wildly. So slap a set of VMR rims and an APR tune on your GTI, and yeah, it’s faster. But it’s not necessarily worth more. That logic has been challenged over the past few years, though, as tuners from the 80s have really come to the forefront of value in the classics market. Ruf, AMG, and Alpina have all produced some stunning cars, and lately, stunning numbers at auction. But it’s hardly a new trend.

Way back in 2013, I watched in amazement as an unassuming 1983 GTI took center stage in a bidding war which resulted in a then-staggering $18,000 worth of bids. I was lucky enough to speak with the new owner, and shared his vision and experience in a Reader Ride story which revealed a lot more not only about why he bid, but about what we didn’t know – how incredibly well preserved that Cashmere White GTI was, with full documentation from day one. Certainly, the chance to own such a piece of history was unrepeatable. Or, was it?

2007 Porsche 911 Turbo

I’m never one to overlook a car with a seemingly tame exterior, but in some cases when you open the doors you wonder if there was a mistake at the factory. I’d love to have a conversation with a production scheduler to figure how and why, outside of customer requests, crazy color combinations get made. If you haven’t caught on where I’m going with today’s car, let me explain.

This 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, a fine car in its own right, is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic. Outside of plain black, this is surely one of most common 911 colors. Open the door however, and you are treated with a full Palm Green leather inside. Palm Green seats, Palm Green carpets, Palm Green dash, Palm Green everything. Dare I say I really like it?

2000 BMW 540i Touring 6-Speed

Are you a ‘want your cake and eat it too’ kind of person? If so, you probably appreciate performance wagons. And why not? They offer practicality, are (generally) much more affordable than sports cars, and can literally fly under the radar. With their numbers dwindling in the open market, it’s always a great time to look at one from our past. Enter the E39 Touring.

There were several configurations that the 5-series Touring was available in over the years, but the ‘big stick’ was the 540i with its 286 horsepower M62. Sure, the N54-equipped E61 was faster and available as a manual. But if you wanted a really classic BMW setup, the 540iT was about as good as it got for US-bound BMW wagons. As a result, many have been turned up by their owners and drafted into M5 clones. Such is the case here, with this Sienna Red Metallic E39 sporting a host of Dinan bits, E39 M5 bits, and a 6-speed manual swap for good measure.
