I’ve been scanning the ads lately for good examples of the car many of us began our love affair with German vehicles, the Volkswagen Beetle. We saw a nice 1962 Beetle Cabriolet last week that was lightly modified. This week we have come across a 1963 Beetle in Virginia that is all original. Purchased new in Florida, this car had but one owner until recently and comes with lots of documentation to add to its provenance.

Up for your consideration is a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. This beetle was a one-owner until approximately 6 months ago. This is a true survivor and comes with complete original documentation including: original window sticker, sales receipt, order form, cancelled check from deposit, dealer stock tags, original keys, original registration from 1963, original dealer pamphlet, and service records from the time of purchase ranging from dealer receipts to local shops. All bound and protected. Please see photos. Vehicle was purchased new at Kinnebrew Motors in Tallahassee, Florida.
Within the last 6 months, original motor has been completely re-built and upgraded including: big jug kit, all necessary machine work, new bronze lifter guides, valve job, etc. Original case has two available additional cuts for future rebuilds. Other improvements include the following: new swing axle boots, new clutch, pressure plate, new throw-out, new wheel cylinders, new King pins, 2.5 inch drop spindles, upgraded roller accelerator pedal, replaced tie-rods as needed, serviced transmission, new brake hoses, Bosch ignition parts, motor to body seals, German muffler, and stainless steel pea-shooters. Starter currently has a bad spot in the armature. Re-built original starter included in sale.
Motor is fully documented as concern to re-build will add photograph later. Motor was re-built by veteran VW mechanic, Wayne Bruner of Fall Branch, Tennessee. Transmission is quiet and shifts great.
Accessories include: Venetian blinds, parcel tray under-dash, original seat belt, pop-out rear windows, factory roof rack, and receipt when purchased new from Kinnebrew Motors. Occasionally, the tires scrub in certain cornering situations; smaller tires suggested upfront.
In regards to the body: pans have been replaced years ago by original owner, all original glass, left heater channel has been patched as usual for Volkswagens of this age as well as the inner fender wells, interior shows normal; not perfect, but very restorable.
Great daily driver. Fantastic on gas mileage. Personal inspection welcome. Please ask any questions, 276-393-3347.
This Beetle is far from perfect, but as they say, they are only original once. Considering the patina and history behind this example, the asking price is certainly reasonable and puts it right in between the “fair” and “good” categories with the Hagerty Price Guide. This is one of those cars I’d make sure was mechanically sound and enjoy it as is. Given the documentation and long ownership, it would be unfortunate to erase those memories in a restoration.
