1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Commemorative Edition

As any Porschephile knows, the marque loves to produce special edition variants, especially of the 911, to signify various milestones in the brand’s life. So when it came time for the 250,000th 911 to roll off the line, Porsche surely couldn’t let that milestone pass by without recognition. Built in 1987 as a model year 1988 car, the Commemorative Edition 911 (also referred to as the Jubilee Edition) featured Diamond Blue Metallic paint on the exterior, with matching Fuchs wheels, and a Silver Blue Metallic interior with Porsche script on the headrests. Other than a short-throw shifter, the Commemorative Edition was mechanically similar to a standard 3.2 Carrera with G50 5-speed transmission. The example featured here is a Cabriolet, located in Miami, and has seen a very reasonable 37,198 miles.

1988 BMW 320i Touring – REVISIT

Despite strong bidding, this 1988 BMW 320i Touring failed to meet the reserve the seller was trying for; now with new 15″ Euroweave Nogaro-colored wheels that look great and a “Buy It Now” price of $13,900, is this the E30 Touring for you?

Paul was right that the Tourings are coming. Perhaps some owners have been holding on to them as forbidden gems and are realizing that, as the importation restrictions are lifted, they will become more and more common and are looking to cash out now. Today’s is a clean little wagon with some eccentricities among the nice choices; one sport seat/one comfort belong to the prior, the M20B25 and 5-speed conversion well in the latter. Bidding is hot, so clearly people are still more interested in finding one here than bringing it in themselves.

1988 Porsche 924S “Le Mans” Special Edition

Porsche must be the king of obscure special models; it seems nearly every week there’s some limited edition model virtually no one has heard of comes up for sale, generally with some premium attached to the asking price because of their rarity. But while many of these limited edition cars didn’t make it to the United States, one that did was the special edition of the 924S. Sure, the 924S wasn’t the most popular car in the Porsche lineup and still isn’t, but it was a competent performer and sold reasonably well. 1988 saw the 924S bump up compression with a touch more horsepower, so if you’re in the market look for one of the already more rare to find 1988 editions. But if you want really rare, to celebrate its Le Mans victories Porsche launched a special edition of the 1988 model; dubbed the “924S SE” in the U.S. and “924S Le Mans” everywhere else, these were effectively 924S Club Sports:

1988 BMW M5

Hopefully, Nate’s E28 M5 ownership inspired you and you’re ready to jump into the M5 market. Bad news; you missed the cheap E28 M5 train. They bottomed out a few years ago, when is was briefly possible to get a pretty clean example under $15,000. Well, they’re back on the rise, in some cases outpacing their arguably more desirable brother the M6. However, if like Nate you’re willing to take a bit more of an adventure in ownership; if you’re willing to accept that you don’t need a perfect example; if you like your car with a bit more character in its lines, then there are still options available. Today’s 1988 M5 is one just such example:

1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V – REVISIT

$_57

Our reader Larry noticed the nicely restored 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V we wrote up earlier this month is back up for auction, with a Buy It Now price of $5,000. At that price, you couldn’t replicate the condition of this model and it looks like a good deal. If yesterday’s mint black Scirocco 16V got you excited but is too rich for you, here’s a cheaper way::

Last week, Nate wrote up a great Tornado Red Scirocco 16V, and while I disagree with his claim that it’s more attractive than the Audi Coupe, otherwise we see eye to eye – these are great little performance hatchbacks that can be run on a budget. Unfortunately, nearly everyone in the VW world already discovered that and finding clean, unmolested examples is quite difficult. Nate longed for some teardrop wheels on his example, and I’m happy to oblige with today’s super clean example, replete with the nicer Euro-bits, too:
