2001 Porsche 911 Turbo

Enough with high-dollar air-cooled Turbos and other rare 911s. They are wonderful machines, but let’s dip our toes back in the performance value end of the pool with this Rainforest Green Metallic 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo with Savannah Beige interior and 31,040 miles on it. In all of my time perusing the Porsche classifieds I cannot ever recall coming across a 996, let along a 996TT, in this color – or frankly in most any shade of green. We’ve remarked before how Green seems to be a persistently underappreciated color. That is especially true of any brighter shade of green; the closer the shade looks to black the more popular it tends to be. Rainforest Green appears to fall into a middle ground. It’s brighter than Forest Green and other similar dark examples, but obviously a far cry from some of Porsche’s pastel greens such as Viper Green or Lime Green. So we will have to see what sort of appeal this garners, but with its Savannah Beige interior it definitely has a feel of the forest about it. It is extremely earthy. For my tastes the exterior is very nice as I have no aversion to a green exterior. I would prefer one of the darker tan colors for the interior, but as I have said previously I think any of the tan interior choices complements a green exterior particularly well. While this one is not perfect, it would suit me better than many other applications.

10K Friday: S Car Go Row Row Row Your Own

Last week’s 10K Friday Colorful Carriers was a bit of a letdown; sure, the colors were great, but the only manual was the B6 V8 S4 Avant, and while it was a cool package there was no denying the trepidation with which I’d approach that particular package. To remedy that issue, this week I’m again focusing on some haulers capable of hauling; we’ve lost the color pallet but all of these Avants are turbocharged and manual, just the way most like it. So, this time around, which is the pick of the litter?

2001 BMW M Roadster

$_27

The BMW S54 engine is right up there in a long line of wonderful inline sixes from BMW, marking a large step forward from its predecessor, the S52. While the S52 provided great sound and smoothness, it lacked the brute force that other great BMW engines have shared. The S54 brought an extra 75 (!!!) horsepower to table, an increase of over 30%, for the last two years of the E36/7 and E36/8’s lives. This one comes claims to come with an extra 30, matching the power of the E46 M3 – not bad when you’re carrying several hundred fewer pounds. The clownshoe may be the funkier of the pair, but the M Coupe keeps all the drop-top fun of the Z3 while losing most of the hit to the self-esteem via some swollen fenders, quad pipes, and serious power. Like an 18 year-old jumping the border to drink, you can hop to Canada for some cheap thrills with this classic silver example, coming with fewer miles and priced a good $5k less than the nicest US examples. And according to the ad, it’s the ONLY example sold in Canada with headlight washers! That’s gotta do something for the rarity-resale value down the road, right?!

2001 Audi S8 6-speed

My somewhat dour post regarding yesterday’s S8 had me feeling a bit downtrodden, and this listing was just what I needed to feel a little better. Not every current S8 owner is less than careful, and there are many who have grabbed one of these spectacular super-sedans because of the same enthusiasm I have for them. In the case of today’s example, it’s a first-year run S8 from 2001. However, the owner has upgraded the often-maligned 5-speed Tiptronic to an 01E 6-speed manual. The dream of many though few have been completed, the 6-speed swap is often mentioned as an alternative to add a little sport and long-term reliability to the mix. But it’s no small undertaking, and finding one that’s done correctly offers the potential buyer a turn-key package without the headaches of heavy lifting:

2001 BMW M Coupe

It might not have seemed so at the time, but if there was ever a car produced with the enthusiast squarely in mind, it was the BMW M Coupe. This lithe sports car only got better with age, with BMW dropping the newly developed S54 inline-6 that would see duty in the E46 M3. Just over 1,100 M Coupes with this engine were produced for 2001 and 2002, making them one of the most highly sought after BMWs of recent memory. This 2001 M Coupe for sale in California is a minter, with less than 40,000 miles on the odometer. This car was sold in 2011 by that famous purveyor of some of the finest Bavarian machinery, Enthusiast Auto Group.
