1986 Porsche 911 Turbo DP 935 – REVISIT

After failing to meet reserve last time it was auctioned in August, you have another opportunity to turn the boost up to “11” on this 1986 911 Turbo DP935. The modifications and look can be a bit polarizing but this one has been updated nicely and it’s too garish in the realm of heavily modified 1980s cars. Last time there were two bids that hit $95,000 – this time, the seller opened the bidding at $95,000 with the reserve still on. I don’t expect it to sell at this amount this time around either – these DP cars take a special kind of buyer and some of the updates have unfortunately taken away some of the originality. What would you pay for this turbocharged wonder?

Double Take: 1992 and 1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC VR6s

It’s been an interesting week or two for Corrado fans over here at GCFSB – but we haven’t gotten the cars we wanted despite seeing a few. Most recently was Nate’s white 1991 G60 model; it had potential and looked clean, but universally there were some things we didn’t like and the price was out of line – plus it was an automatic. Earlier in the week, I wrote up a sweet track-prepped 1992 SLC VR6; awesome if you were planning on some hot laps, but you’d need a trailer since it didn’t look to be easily road-legal – that really limits its use and appeal. Then we had the somewhat poorly modified Tuner Tuesday example of a 1992 SLC VR6 that I spent most of the post demodding. So today I hope to rectify our “good” Corrado drought with two nice examples. They also both buck my normal description and complaint of Volkswagen owners; they’re clean (even inside!), relatively original and maintained. Which would you choose?

Wednesday Wheels Roundup

Another week and another set of rare to see wheels. One of the things I love about doing this feature is that I come across wheels I had long forgotten or didn’t even know existed. Today there are some neat ones in here, such as the BBS RT700s pictured above that would really dress up a Mercedes or older Audi. There’s also a mega-rare J.A.Pearce wheels for early Porsche 911s, along with some great looking Hartge and Racing Dynamics wheels for BMWs. I also included a set of Fondmetal F1s – remember when they sponsored an Formula One team? Finally, there’s a set of one of my favorite Audi 4x108mm wheels – the optional sport wheels from the U.S. spec Cabriolet (they were also seen on some European sport models of the 90) that look spectacular and are very affordable.

Heap of the Week: 1995 Audi S6 Avant

When opportunity knocks, sometimes you should answer the door; this may be one of those cases, especially if you’re a fan of fast Audi wagons. The Audi S6 Avant has been a cult classic since new; near bullet-proof engines capable of monster power, all-wheel drive in a slick package, a manual gearbox and room to carry enough to satisfy even Hannibal’s trips to Italy, the S6 is a unique package that relied underscored Audi’s mission in the 1980s and 1990s – they were different than everyone else, but in a very good way. Sure, if you want pure driving bliss on switchbacks or near-silent Autobahn cruising, BMW and Mercedes were better options in those specific cases – but as an all around package, the S6 Avant had no peers in the marketplace. That didn’t translate into overwhelming sales – but the exclusivity has if anything bolstered the legend of the Avants and artificially increased demand. How much has demand increased? Take a look at the bidding on this S6 Avant – at time of writing with 4 days left and the reserve still on, it’s $8,100. That may not sound particularly shocking until you find out that the motor is blown:

10K Friday: A44ordable Audis – 5000CS quattro Avant v. 5000S quattro v. V8 quattro v. 100 quattro

The Type 44 Audi was an impressive advance for German automobiles, a huge leap forward for Audi in a new marketplace – but also nearly the cause of its demise. It was an aerodynamic, futuristic sedan when both BMW and Mercedes-Benz seemed to be producing cars stuck in the 1970s. It was the blueprint for most modern luxury sedans from not only German companies, but many of the advances were copied by the Japanese, Italians and Americans for their large sedans. Yet, by 1990 Audi nearly pulled out of the American market thanks to some creative journalism from 60 Minutes, who in their effort to prove Audi was at fault for some unintended acceleration cases nearly killed off the company entirely. In part as a result of their efforts, it’s become quite rare to find clean examples of them today – but it’s also because they were such good, long-lived and solidly built machines that few have lower miles today. While I recent featured a few 20V turbocharged examples in the 20V Turbo comparison, today we’ll look at a few of the lesser appreciated examples, starting with a clean 5000CS quattro Avant in Canada:
