Just over a month ago, I featured a 1971 Pagoda that is so similar to today’s car that I actually thought it was the same car when I first looked at the listing. Luckily, it’s not, but I thought I’d investigate this one a little further because who doesn’t love a nice Pagoda? (except that forsaken 1969 in NYC we all screamed in horror over) So lets take a look at this surprisingly reasonably priced 280SL located in Queens, NY.

The King’s car: Elvis’ 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL


Elvis Presley loved his cars. Or maybe he just liked being seen in cars. Either way, he had his far share of flashy automobiles in his life. Cadillac, Lincoln, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz highlighted a list which included other not-so-glorious makes that just looked flashy. Often when we see ”Elvis cars” come up for sale, they aren’t actually his cars. Usually they were bought by him and given as gifts to family or friends. Today’s featured 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL isn’t that case.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300TE


The W124 Mercedes-Benz Estate is a favorite around this site and personally one of my favorite cars that were ”honest”. They had the enormous task of following the legendary W123 Estates and giving Mercedes wagon buyers just a little more. It had to have the same quality of the W123 but be a little faster, a little more comfortable, hold a little more and live up to the standard that Mercedes was known at the time. Without saying, the W123 Estate is still king in the used Mercedes wagon market, but if you don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a car that is over 30 years-old at it’s youngest version, the W124 300TE is still a great buy. This example on the beaches of New Jersey can still give you everything you want from a Mercedes-Benz Estate.

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL


Often when we feature the classic W113 Mercedes Pagoda, it’s an example that has low-miles, flawless paint, an interior that is pristine and spends most of the time tucked away, rarely to see the light of day. With these cars now regularly fetching six figures, I don’t blame the owners for protecting their investments. Infrequently do we see a Pagoda you can feel okay about using on a regular basis to enjoy while still maintaining it’s beauty and stature. This 1971 280SL located in Atlanta can offer all that.

1997 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG Wagon


You might be noticing a trend here. About a week ago we featured a W211 E63 AMG wagon and Tuesday we featured a W210 E420 Brabus 6.0 wagon. Both silver, both really fast. Today’s post is no different. This time it’s a 1997 Mercedes-Benz E60 AMG wagon located outside of Vancouver, BC in New Westminster.

A few days ago we featured a W211 E63 AMG wagon that is one of the baddest long roofs you can buy. In the later half of the 2000’s, getting that kind of power from your wagon was easy. You could ride down to your local Mercedes-Benz dealer, write a large check, then ride off and answer the question that no one ever asked. Why does someone need a station wagon that damn fast? In 1996, it wasn’t that easy. In order to pin your groceries to the back window when you accelerate, you needed to do a little more leg work. Enter legendary Mercedes tuner Brabus. This 1996 E430 Brabus 6.0 Wagon located in Estonia was transformed from an adequately powered kombi to supercar with a hatch.

2007 Mercedes-Benz SL65

One of the things I’ve liked about moving back to Washington State from the SF Bay Area is that seeing rare, expensive cars is special again. Living next to the most expensive zip code in the country meant that pretty much every luxury car was the top-of-the-line model, from BMW M5s and Alpina B7s to Audi S8s and RS7s to Mercedes-Benz E/S/CLS/SL/ML/G/GL63s and 65s. I got desensitized and disdainful, scowling at the 80 year olds puttering around El Camino Real with 500-600hp on tap. The Mercedes AMG 65 models always caught my attention with their gunmetal wheels as the main giveaway besides the badges, a nearly $200k car just hanging out next to the yoga studio and completely unnoticed by the general public.

Well, they were roughly $200k when new. Depreciation hits them harder than their (transmission-limited) 738 lb-ft of torque and now this twin-turbo V12 GT is roughly a third of its original price. They’re not the most attractive roadsters, but it’s certainly a more balanced design than the “umm… copy-paste-update new shape here!” look of the current R231 SL. This R230 looks a bit more classic in black on black and has the Panoramic Roof option on the folding top so you can see the sky without exposing yourself to the commonfolk. Carbon fiber puts a performance veneer on the interior, but this will never be a canyon carver. It’s a 604hp highway bomber, and hopefully having covered fewer than 12k miles will keep scary-expensive maintenance on the V12 at bay for a while.

Where It All Started: 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen

Looking around today’s world, it’s hard to imagine what the next “big thing” might be. Is it Elon Musk’s re-imaging of the entire automobile industry or efforts like his and Richard Branson’s efforts to bring humanity towards Space? Perhaps it’s something much smaller, such as the recent proliferation of drones and smartphones. One thing is for certain; head back to 1880, and it would have been hard to imagine what the three competing inventors in Stuttgart would have produced in a short time. When the first production automobile was unveiled to the public, it was – in fact – far from a guarantee of propulsion. The number of hurdles which Benz and others had to leap in order to create the car boggles the mind. Two recent programs bring this to light; Drive recently did a special on Germany where they highlighted Bertha Benz – the real power behind Karl Benz’s invention – and her 120 mile drive to her home village from Mannheim. The other was a classic race undertaken by Wayne Carini on Chasing Classic Cars when he drove in the Veteran Car Run from London to Brighton. That was significant for a few reasons; it commemorates the ruling that so-called “light locomotives” (read: cars) no longer had to be preceded by a man walking and waving a flag to alert motorists, capping their speed ostensibly at 4 m.p.h.. This ruling took place in 1896, a full decade after the car was introduced – and to commemorate, a few motorists sped along at 14 m.p.h. – the new limit – for the 60-odd mile run with a few light slopes to the seaside community of Brighton. Mr. Carini’s journey didn’t go particularly smoothly, suffering multiple breakdowns and even with full support of a team of mechanics, they couldn’t ultimately make it. It highlighted how far cars have come, but underscored even more greatly the achievement of Bertha Benz, who drove with her two sons in what was an even more primitive design over a distance twice as far as Carini. There was no support team. Not only that, there was no anything – no mechanics, no service stations or gas stations, no cell phones, no navigation. Mrs. Benz needed to repair the car herself, and along the way managed to unintentionally create brake linings and reportedly also suggested the first multi-gearbox to assist in climbing some steep hills, since apparently children had to push her up some slopes. With no gas stations – and, in reality no gasoline, either – Mrs. Benz stopped at the local drug stores to pick up turpentine to feed her husband’s creation. The challenges that these early pioneers undertook were simply amazing, and they set the stage for what would become not luxury item for the rich, but a necessity of the modern world:

1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL AMG

Produced from 1971 to 1989, the R107/C107 second longest series in the Mercedes-Benz line up (second only to the G series). The R107 was the successor to the legendary W113 chassis and combined the nimble chassis with V8 power making these cars the benchmark for sports coupes in the ‘70s and well in to the ‘80s.

So how does on improve upon one of the most iconic German cars of all time? In this case, it was as simple as going on a shopping spree in the AMG accessory catalog. From 1980 through 1985 Merecedes AMG only offered an aftermarket catalog, rather than the turn-key cars that it does today. At some point in the early ‘80s, this car received the LL Cool J video treatment, with a full AMG interior, body kit, color matched Ronals, euro lights, and full monochrome paint making this an amazing period car.

1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL AMG on eBay

Classic Mercedes-Benz 1972 350SL AMG. Has 78,260 original miles documented. Title reads 77,621 actual miles. Truly a rare find. I also have a copy of the title when I bought the car. If you look up the lady’s name it says her age of 81 years, a unique name. The radiator has the original two stickers, they usually peel off after 60k miles. In one year I have put a little over 600 miles on it. New paint job last summer. I have pictures of how I found it. The paint was covering all the chrome, so I repainted it the same way. Has both original blue license plates. Both doors close with ease just release and shut. AMG interior parts, steering wheel. Color matched complete speedometer. Exterior Ronal R9s, complete body kit AMG front spoiler, AMG door wings, rear air dam spoiler and trunk spoiler. Delete chrome. Paint match. First AMG body kit built for the 107s. Repainted all red, AMG did that in its early years covering all chrome.

The wind deflector is not included in the sale. If the winner is interested in the OEM exhaust system let me know. Comes with owners manual and complete tool set, first aid kit, hard top tool. The engine and transmission are in great condition, performance exhaust system. Great suspension, the car rides firm and smooth. This amazing 1972 R107 350SL AMG has no, I mean no rust anywhere. Very rare for a 40 year old car. Complete tune up, changed all filters and fluids. Runs like a champion as it should. Just has a few cons: the drivers side power window works, but slow to go up just at the end. One big crack on the center console. Clock stopped ticking, light works. The rest is in great condition, everything works, A/C, heater, power windows, radio, you name it and it works. All padding under the carpet in the car is in very good condition. The trunk has the padding as well. Rare. I’ve seen others but none like mine. Fantastic Mercedes-Benz 350SL roadster. The first in the US. Own history. The soft top is original and in good shape. I would just change the plastic windows.


I’m generally not a Mercedes-Benz fan, and that’s no real secret, but add AMG to the equation, and you have my attention.  As a huge fan of ‘80s automotive styling (I know  it’s strange) I love the monochromatic look of this car, and can picture myself driving this as an extra in an LL Cool J, or Bel Biv Devoe video.

Lust aside, there are a few things that concerns me about this car, and at the top of the list is the discrepancy between the odometer, and the title. While it’s only 639 miles, I’d be curious to see if there is any documentation explaining the variance. The only other concern I have is the “too good to be true” pricing. Average retail on a 1972 350SL is in the $15,000 ballpark, considering the low mileage, and the old school AMG upgrades, the $9,000 buy it now price is a steal.

Assuming that the documented miles all check out this is a great car. It’s not an OEM restoration, which could be the reason for the price being so much lower than the market, but it’s a great time capsule of early AMG tuning, which to me is more valuable than a 100% original car.


1983 Mercedes 500SEC Gullwing Styling Garage

Keeping with the flavor of my last post on the Gullwing Sbarro I thought this similar aged take on the classic Benz Gullwing take was nice.
Nowadays you see everything from Dodge Neons to Honda Civics running around with cheap poor quality Lambo style door kits.
The gullwing setup on this Merc is a much more involved project since it involves cutting the roof. When you cut this much metal out of the car you have to add significant reinforcement to maintain a safe body.
Styling Garage, SGS, the company that made the modifications, was well known in the 80s for making dramatic visual upgrades to Mercedes cars.
Many SGS tuned cars were given SGS badges out front and custom body work instead of the three pointed star. This one has some AMG body parts, but looks mostly stock. Inside there is some custom guages and nice wood steering wheel.
Original price on the conversion was the same as the price of the car itself.
This specimen has 40,000 miles, and a seller looking for $15,000. It has new paint, but as you can tell from the wood planks holding the doors up there is some work to be done. Lots of depreciation here for a really unique car.
