Paint-to-Sample 2009 Porsche 911 GT2

I ended last week with an Orange 911 Carrera 2.7 that had me completely captivated. It possessed just the right mix of aggressiveness and vibrancy within a classic 911 package. The car we see here, a 2009 Porsche 911 GT2 located in Houston, takes those attributes of aggression and vibrant color and turns them up a few notches. This time the color is a paint-to-sample orange borrowed from the GT3 RS with contrasting black accents and black interior. Draped over the lines of the GT2 it leaves no doubt about the urgency with which this car accelerates and corners. The rest is pretty standard GT2 material, which of course really isn’t standard at all. Loads of turbocharged power pummels the ground via a 6-speed manual transmission directed through the rear wheels. In my ever deepening quest to feature every orange Porsche, this GT2 currently stands near the top for its overall audacity and performance capabilities.

Feature Listing: Lapis Blue 2003 Porsche 911 GT2

If last week’s GT2 RS took insanity beyond what you consider reasonable, then the 996 GT2 may reign in the craziness just enough to be sensible. It also comes with a far lower price tag. Like all things 996 the performance per dollar quotient of these machines is spectacular and matched by few other cars, even when looking at one of the highest priced models in the line. With 456 hp directed only to the rear wheels and around 200 fewer pounds to move around the GT2 returns a level of ferocity and purity to the Turbo’s driving experience that had been gradually softened over the model’s life. Though it was no longer necessary for Porsche to produce such a car in order to meet homologation requirements, they still followed a track-focused mantra for GT2 production that forces the driver to remain attuned to every aspect of the car’s current state. It’s as if the rawness of the original 930 had returned, but with a lot more power! We don’t see many GT2s come up for sale so they always attract our notice when they do. This particular example is especially rare: a Lapis Blue 2003 Porsche 911 GT2 with Black leather interior and 48,812 miles on it. The seller has said this is the only example he’s seen in this color, and my experience is the same. There are plenty of Black, Silver, and Guards Red examples. There even seem to be a good deal in Speed Yellow. This is this only one I’ve seen in Blue.

2004 Porsche 911 GT2

At the beginning of this week I featured a pretty highly modified Black 930 Slantnose Coupe that possessed a great deal of menace that would separate it from just about everything else around. The car we see here, a Black 2004 Porsche 911 GT2, might be thought of as a factory version of that aggressive 930. Relative to a 930 Slantnose the styling of the GT2 is actually pretty subdued, but mechanically there are no such limitations as these packed a serious punch with every one of their 477 horses directed only to the rear wheels. For buyers who felt disparaged by Porsche’s use of all-wheel drive in the Turbo, the GT2 provided reassurance that the marque had not gone soft. Its performance bonafides were as secure as ever, even if the GT2 was no longer needed for homologation purposes.

2004 Porsche 911 GT2

I guess I couldn’t stay away from high-priced Turbos for too long, though at least this time we are staying within the realm of the water-cooled 911, rather than venturing back into the rarefied air of the air-cooled models. Here we have a Speed Yellow 2004 Porsche 911 GT2, located in Oklahoma, with 8,150 miles on it. While the price here certainly dwarfs that of a standard 996TT, buyers are at least getting a healthy does of extra performance, both in the guise of increased power – an additional 62 hp for this 2004 GT2 over the standard Turbo – and also reduced weight with the GT2 coming in around 200 pounds lighter. When first introduced for the 993, the GT2 rekindled the rear-drive turbocharged mayhem that 911 owners had come to expect from these machines. While the standard turbo took a more civilized turn by introducing all-wheel drive, the GT2 went in the other direction increasing power, reducing weight, and delivering all of its power to the rear wheels only. They were initially produced in order to satisfy homologation requirements, but with the GT3 RS now fulfilling that purpose for the 996, the GT2 was left to simply exist as a mix of terror and excitement. They are a rare sight to behold on the roads, but when unleashed in the wild, heads definitely will turn.

2008 Porsche 911 GT2

It really doesn’t get much more flashy (at least among Porsches) than a Speed Yellow GT2. Beginning with the 993 Porsche began to civilize the diabolical behaviors of its 911 Turbo. By adding all-wheel drive and twin-turbocharging the Turbo retained its prodigious performance, but it now came in a more user friendly form. For the vast majority of drivers it was now faster as well since its limits could be approached more readily. Let’s be clear though, even with these added dynamic improvements the Turbo was still a very powerful machine with a rearward weight balance. After the introduction of all wheel-drive it didn’t take long for Porsche to return to its Turbo roots with a rear-drive model, the GT2. Naturally, Porsche was not only interested in running an all-wheel drive 911 in its motorsports competition and the GT2 satisfied the necessary homologation requirements for a rear-drive racer. But these are not just a rear-drive version of the Turbo. The GT2 is lighter, more powerful, and fitted with suspension and braking upgrades to suit these changes. Since its inception, the GT2 has been the ultimate 911 only recently surpassed by the GT2 RS, which in traditional RS fashion increased the weight savings and power level to produce a truly special machine. For our perusal here, we have a Speed Yellow 2008 Porsche 911 GT2, located in New York, with Black interior and 14,063 miles on it.

Tuner Tuesday: 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo X50 Techart

It’s fairly shocking that for around the same price as a fairly lightly optioned base model Cayman, you can leap into entirely another world of performance with a 911 Turbo. Of course, there’s a price to pay for this relative leap in performance, and that’s that you have to settle at this price point for the current ugly duckling of the Porsche world – the 996. Now, of course there will be drawbacks to buying into an older car – for one, it’s not new with a warranty, and the 996 isn’t the prettiest Porsche ever built. But in terms of performance for dollar spent, right now it’s pretty hard to beat a package like the 996 Twin Turbo with the X50 option.

Tuner Tuesday: 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo “GT2”

Earlier in my Ruf-modified 930 post I asked if you needed an original version of the car. Well, I’m at it again, this time with a car modified to recreate an awesome version of the 993 Turbo – the homologated GT2 Turbo. With more power and lightened to only two-wheel drive with some of the best wheels ever fitted to a Porsche (in my opinion, anyway) the GT2 was an instant classic – so much so that Porsche has subsequently recreated it in 996 and 997 versions. But while the last few versions of the GT2 have been nutty ultimate-street versions of the Turbo, the original GT2 was really a race car toned down for the street; in that mold, today’s 1997 911 Turbo has been converted to capture some of that dual-purpose magic. The question is, does it achieve the magic of the original GT2?

Tuner Tuesday: Rauh-WELT Begriff 1994 Porsche 911

Few tuners have popped into the Porsche scene with as much of a splash as Rauh-WELT Begriff. Starting with basically stock bodied 911s, Nakai-san hand makes body kits for these cars seemingly freehand and by eye only. If you’ve watched the video of him performing his work, it’s simply amazing; it reminds me of images I’ve seen of Andy Warhol painting the M1 Procar. That’s high praise, and I think in many ways it’s deserved – the creations Nakai-san envisions are some of the best, most aggressive looking 911s out there. While they may not be to everyone’s taste, one cannot deny the impressive nature of the work when you see the finished product. Today there is a claimed one of one 993 for sale in Britain:

Indeed, if you search out images of RWB cars, this car quickly pops up. The kit looks in large part like the famed GT2 993 Evo, but every bit is custom made which is why the work is so impressive. The color is perfect, the wheels are neat – this car looks ready for Mulsanne without all of the stickers. As an exercise in art, it’s over the top but so wonderful I can’t help but look. Is that wonderful nature worth $135,500? Considering the unique nature of these cars it’s hard to say whether they’ll appreciate like Rufs have, but if you want the look of a RWB right now you’ve got to pay to play.

Revisit: 1997 Porsche 911 Andial Twin-Plug Twin-Turbo

The 1997 Porsche 911 ANDIAL Twin-Plug Twin-Turbo we featured back in September on Rennlist has cropped up on eBay. As I write this I’m not sure what the reserve is, but bidding is at $119,000$ and it’s not met yet – strong bidding for a 993 Turbo, but in line with the rarity and specialness of this car. We’ll see if it gets close to the original $170,000 asking price!

I find it extraordinarily sad that this year saw the nearly unnoticed passing of one of the great Porsche tuning firms, ANDIAL. If you’re newer to the scene, ANDIAL probably doesn’t mean much to you, but if you grew up in the 1980s or were a fan of motorsports then they were one of the top tuning firms pushing out some of the fastest Porsches in the world – they were really the U.S. equivalent of Ruf. They backed that performance up with race-winning efforts – ANDIAL became the defacto 962 race engine supplier in the United States, and racked up an impressive string of both prototype and GT racing wins and championships. Though they were very well respected, ANDIAL downsized as the trio of owners aged and then passed away, culminating in the retirement this past February of the last remaining founder, Dieter Inzenhofer, Porsche Motorsports North America bought the name, but with undisclosed plans to use it, we’ll just have to wait and see. Coming across an ANDIAL tuned car is something of a rare treat, and for the 993 they cooked up a twin-plug, twin turbo 3.8 motor that was just a monster. Today’s example is one of the best prepared in the world:

Car History
Here is the information I have been able to glean about the car.
This highly optioned car was purchased in the Chicago area by car collector John Pizer. He immediately had it flat-bedded to the Andial facility with only delivery miles on the car.
The full Andial 3.8 liter twin plug conversion was performed at an estimated cost of 55-60 thousand dollars.Andial Twin Plug
A few years later the car was purchased by collector Amir Fahti in Calabasas with around 4000 miles on the clock.
In 2007 I purchased the car from Mr. Fahti with 27,181 miles on the clock. Unfortunately Mr. Fahti had lost the build sheet on the car. Andial confirms that this is one of the 19 certified 3.8 liter twin plug conversions, of which only 17 remain. Andial Registry

Over the next few years I had Michael Schatz MKS Performancein Camarillo fettle the car into tip top condition, replacing the front differential, viscous coupler, clutch accumulator, steering rack and installing a set of GT2 uprights and tie rods, new hood shocks, breeze constant torque clamps on the intercooler hoses and forge diverter valves. I removed the k40 radar detector and installed functional front brake cooling ducts and a larger Cargraphics oil cooler. I installed yellow rear seat belts to match the front seat belts. Finally, a complete corner balance and alignment and rake was performed.

In 2011 elected to make this car into my vision of the ultimate street version of a GT2.
I contacted 1998 IMSA GT2 champion Jochen Rohr who generously supplied me with the rear wing and carbon fibre deck-lid plus the BBS wheels he had left over from that race team. I sourced a brand new OEM European narrow-body front bumper and some hand laid fender flares and commissioned Ed Palmer at Kundensport to perform the conversion.

The car is everything I could have hoped for. It looks fabulous in my eyes. It rides very smoothly. The GT2 uprights and tie rods have minimized bump steer and the ride is not harsh in any way but it still handles brilliantly. The paint is exceptional. It is the best rding 993 I have ever driven. I clay barred it using Final Detail as the lubricant over a weekend and it presents very well indeed. It is nearly impossible to put the car cover on by yourself because it keeps shooting off as the paint is so smooth. Obviously the car is brutally fast but also very tractable. The larger pistons on the RS rear calipers match the 14 inch front brakes very well. A minor service and detailing was performed last week.

With the passing of Arnold in 2011 and the purchase of Andial by Porsche Motorsports in 2012, I believe no more of these cars will be built and a stellar chapter in Porsche history has closed.

Nits to pick:

There are a few rock chips on the front.

The front tires can rub if the wheel is turned to full lock at parking lot speeds.

The Thielert dual program street/race gas ecu is a bit unsophisticated and no longer supported. They need two revolutions of the crank to start the car and can run a little rough just off of idle. It occaisionally becomes “confused” and can cough and spit for a bit. Then it remembers it’s manners and clears up. It is not foolproof. You need to make sure you have 100 octane race gas in the tank before switching to the race gas setting or damage could occur.

There is a more modern Andial aproved ecu available, but you lose the dual programming capabilities. Having the “psychopath switch” under your left hand is just too much damn fun! As a result I elected to keep the dual program ecu and live with the very minor flaws.

The GT2 flares look perfect, the wheels look perfect, I love the understated color…I have to say, the only thing I’m not really a fan of is the seatbelts. Some of the technology in the engine tuning has progressed and the owner notes that this earlier multi-level Theilert computer has its hiccups, but depending on what you wanted to do this could be solved either somewhat expensively in a standalone programmable ECU or very expensively by sending it to PMNA to let them sort it out.

I don’t think the ANDIAL name really carries the weight of the name Ruf outside of the Porsche crowd, so my guess is that someone who is really in the 993 know is going to be the one to scoop this gem up. The price is probably realistic given the rarity and the modifications, but it’s a pretty narrow market for this car. You could replicate the look easily enough if you have deep pockets, but that motor is really something special. It’s a shame that we won’t be seeing any more from ANDIAL, but I do hope then name doesn’t fade away completely into obscurity. Given the choice between this car and a Ruf, I would have to think long and hard before plunking down my hoard of cash.
