2014 will reportedly introduce to the U.S. a car that many Volkswagen fans have been eagerly awaiting – the Golf “GTD” TDi. Basically a GTi with the turbo diesel in place of the 2.0T, the GTD looks great, drives wonderfully and gets some fantastic mileage. But go back a few years and we basically already had the prototype here; the short lived 2010 Jetta TDi Cup Edition. What you got for your hard earned bucks was a basically a Jetta GLi with it’s heart yanked out and replaced by the thrifty and torque-laden turbo diesel. But this wasn’t just a styling exercise for Volkswagen – they had actively engaged in racing the Jetta TDi in the “TDi Cup” to help promote the TDi brand, so this car has some racing heritage as well. Only 1,500 were produced in black, white, blue, or today’s Salsa Red:

2007 Volkswagen GTi Fahrenheit Edition

Last week I wrote up a 2007 Fahrenheit Jetta GLi, a special limited-run of all-yellow sport sedans. Today, here’s the orange-haired brother of that car – the GTi Fahrenheit Edition. Limited to a run of 1200 like the Jetta, all of these GTis appeared in Magma Orange with matching interior trim, but the same Charleston 18″ wheels and a slightly lower suspension. One important difference from the GLi? While the GLi could be had with a 6-speed manual, the GTi was DSG only:

We are very excited to offer a very fine automobile; a 2007 Volkswagen GTI Fahrenheit Edition. The GTI carries on the tradition of being an affordable “pocket rocket” by providing performance in a small, high-value package. GTIs have been part of the Volkswagen lineup for two decades. Each GTI is equipped with a sport suspension, darkened taillight lenses and dual tailpipes. Body-colored bumpers, mirror housings, side moldings, door handles and grille round out the exterior picture. The 2007 Volkswagen GTI is a performance-oriented hatchback. Both two-door and four-door body styles are offered. Standard equipment includes xenon HID headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, power windows and locks, keyless entry, cruise control, sport front seats, a 60/40-split rear seat and a 10-speaker, six-CD/MP3 audio system with an auxiliary jack and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. This limited-edition Fahrenheit trim features hot orange paint, heated leather sport seats, orange interior accents and a sport-tuned suspension wearing unique 18-inch alloys. Height-adjustable rear head restraints are standard. The instruments are backlit in a vibrant blue hue at night, and the driver faces a sporty three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Standard side curtain airbags protect the heads of outboard occupants in side collisions. Seat-mounted side-impact airbags, all-disc antilock brakes and daytime running lights are also standard. This VW GTI comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a six-speed, sequential-shifting automated manual called DSG. An automatic-transmission GTI delivers impressive performance. Having so much power at hand raises the fun quotient, and this hatchback’s confident handling makes it even more appealing. The DSG’s lightning-quick shifts are faster than a driver can execute with a manual transmission. The DSG transmission (standard on this Fahrenheit trim) can be shifted via paddles on the steering wheel or placed in fully automatic mode. Even when the transmission is in automatic mode, a couple of quick flicks of the downshift paddle instantly drops the car into a lower gear for a handy blast of acceleration. The bucket seats are exceptionally comfortable because they are shaped to provide excellent lateral and under-thigh support. During sporty driving, the seats hold the driver and front-seat passenger securely. Sporty handling is a large part of the GTI equation. The front McPherson struts and multi-link independent rear axle have been tuned to provide good road holding. The independent rear axle yields a compliant ride without sacrificing cornering prowess. VW said that the fully independent four-link suspension, with coil springs, telescopic shocks and stabilizer bar, allowed engineers to create a large opening into the luggage compartment. Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, stability control, front seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In NHTSA testing, the four-door GTI earned four stars out of five for its protection of front occupants in frontal impacts. For that agency’s side-impact test, the car earned a five-star rating. In IIHS crash tests, the car scored a “Good” (the highest possible) in both the frontal-offset and side-impact tests and an “Acceptable” (the second highest) rating in rear-impact testing. This VW also earned that agency’s “Silver” award as a Top Safety Pick. We have owner manuals, one key and all floor mats for this car. In general, special editions of the GTi hold more value than special editions of the Jetta; that goes pretty much across the board, but is especially true with the Fahrenheit. Why? The color alone explains it – Magma Orange was the “it” color for the Mk.5 GTi. As such, even though it has a few more miles than the GLi I showed last week, the asking price is a few thousand dollars more. Is it worth it? Well, as I said in the GLi post, I’m a Golf fan myself, so I already prefer this model. I love the combination of the wheels and the color. However, I’m not a huge fan of the DSG transmission in this car and for me that really limits the appeal. When you further factor in that the asking price is the best part of double most other Mk.5 GTis, you really have lost me. While the novelty of the color is pretty cool, I just don’t see how it justifies a $5,000 premium at this time.

2007 Volkswagen Jetta GLi Fahrenheit Edition

It’s funny how similar the Golf and Jetta are, and yet how far apart the people that really get into them are. Enthusiasts really seem to like one or the other, but generally don’t really like both. I have to say, while I’m pretty firmly in the “Golf” camp myself, there are a few GLis that I really appreciate – the original Mk.1 GLis are some of my favorites, and in more recent times the Mk.5 and Mk.6 GLis have been pretty impressive and competent sports sedans. In particular, the newest of the range really steps up as a budget A4. But with a few special editions available in both the Mk.4 and Mk. 5 platform, there are some things to love there as well. Today’s Fahrenheit Edition GLi is one such special; a Jetta GLi that was turned up to 11 to make it a little more special:

The Yellow caries over to the interior on this car, with stitching and accents which tie it all together. The “Charleston” 18″ wheels are neat and fit the design well, though these show a little curbing typical on Mk.5 wheels. Otherwise, the car appears in great shape and with lower miles is offered at a quite reasonable $10,777 – a figure not far out of line with the earlier and more problematic Mk. 4 GLis. Truth be told, I like the look of the Mk.4 slightly more than the Mk.5, and some would complain that the interior details on Jettas of late have cheapened. But keeping in mind this is a 200hp, 6 speed performance sedan for under $11,000 in great shape, I think it’s pretty reasonably priced for a special daily driver!

Like all Volkswagen models, Jettas seem to draw a very different crowd than the quite similar Golf, and generally that crowd (among enthusiasts anyways) has a bit of a reputation for being….different. Personally, my favorite GLis are the 2.0 16Vs with big bumpers, but Volkswagen has listened to what you wanted over the years, and with age has come more options, bigger bodies and more power. Still it seems that the Jetta falls squarely in the shadow of it’s badonkadonakless brother, the GTi. That belies what a good car the Jetta has become since the original A1; it’s remained the sophisticated and sporty option amongst small sedans while others have come and gone. Today I want to look at two GLi options that are very popular amongst the tuner crowds. Let’s start with a Mk. 4 2004 GLi:

I have to admit, I think the 20th Anniversary Edition GTis look a little more tasteful than the GLis with the body kits, but I’ve always loved the 18″ BBS RC option on these cars – they look fantastic. This car offers a pretty tidy package with plenty of speed out of the box, but the new owner can go nuts and modify it to pretty unbelievable levels if desired. I wouldn’t push it too much; the front driver VWs with transverse engines tend to be torque steerers that eat transmissions, suspension components and driveshafts as the power rises, but you could easily push this to 250 horsepower if desired and have a blast. If the Mk.4 is a little too fussy and unreliable for you, perhaps you’d like a little more refinement offered in the Mk.5 chassis, like this 2006:

Change to the fifth generation Jetta resulted in a massive increase in quality, refinement, and sophistication for the Jetta, much as the jump from third to fourth had. The 2.0 turbo motor gained power, smoothness and torque over the earlier 1.8Ts behaving a little less like an on/off switch. Early units were noted for oil consumption, but the overall package is pretty slick. Looking at this car in comparison to the A2 Jetta, it’s hard to believe they’re priced pretty similarly. VW did ride quality a favor by swapping down to 17″ “Classics” wheels that are more pothole friendly though don’t look as spectacular; swapping them out for a set of OEM 18″ wheels is easily enough done, like the R32 spec Omanyt alloys that are a favorite of mine, on Ebay now:

Choosing between these two for me is difficult; I prefer the look of the earlier car slightly to the less fussy and rounder design of the Mk. 5, but at the same time it’s hard to argue with the refinement and general improvements in the later model. Mk. 4s can be pretty tough to live with by some reports, and I have not heard the same problem of the Mk. 5 to this point, though being a VW product, I’d expect the unexpected and presume that an engine light will be on in the not-too-distant future. Turbocharged fun, sporty handling, practicality, decent fuel economy, and low entry price make these great options for the daily grind.
