Earlier this week I looked at a W124 diesel wagon and explained it’s probably as close are you are going to get to a true successor of the legendary W123 estate. Well today we have one of those W123 wagons that truly show how great these vehicles can really be and why they still command the prices they do. This 1983 300TD in Deep Blue with Palomino MB-Tex for sale in California sports only 71,000 miles and is nearly perfect in every way. But bring your check book, because this wagon will cost you dearly.

1983 Mercedes Benz 300TD turbo diesel station wagon. Code 900 deep blue with palomino MB-Tex interior. 71,200 original miles. Documented one owner California car with service history. The original owner, Mr. Solomon Levy, was a successful nuclear engineer in San Jose, who purchased the car for his wife. This vehicle has always been garaged and highly maintained. This is a numbers-matching, highly-original survivor, presented in a phenomenal color combination. Equipped with the optional rear facing third seat and roof rack cross bars. Much of the original cadmium plating and cosmoline (shipping wax) is still present in the engine bay and undercarriage. A lot of the factory paint markings are still visible on bolt heads. Every system on this car is fully operational; every button does what it should. The engine starts perfectly when cold, transmission is silky smooth, and steering is tight and straight. Taking a really close look at this 300TD, this is probably as close to a showroom car as you are going to get outside of doing a full restoration. Everything is perfect aside for some underside parts that show some normal wear. I think I’m more impressed with the paint on the body and the wheels as it is outstanding for being in sunny California. Bundt wheels are notoriously hard to keep clean and these look like they are brand new which is astonishing for having over 71,000 miles on them. This wagon also has the third row seating option which, in 2017, is far more interesting to look at rather than travel with six or more people.

Now the price tag for the perfect 300TD. Are you ready? It’s $32,000. Yes, I know that is extremely high and you can probably find decent examples for a fourth of this price, but this is what you pay if you want the best. People are more than willing to shell out tens of thousands of dollars for the golden-era Mercedes cars and I don’t think one will be any different. It’s not going to sell tomorrow or next week, but someone with money to burn and strong nostalgia of the 1980s will find this car and have no problem spending over $30,000 on it. This is easily the nicest 300TD I’ve seen come up for sale recently, so if you’ve been waiting for the perfect wagon, this is probably it.

Green with Evny: 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

I’ve confessed my love for green cars before and today’s featured vehicle is no different. This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300CD in Moss Green up for sale in Florida combines my favorite color with one of my favorite cars in the W123. It’s not often that I see a Moss Green car come up for sale and even better, the interior is green as well.

I have owned these cars for over 10 years. I scour the country daily for them and of all that I have ever owned this is the coolest most unique 300CD. It might have been a one off special order. I have never ever seen the color combination in a turbo diesel. Moss green with green interior. The car is completely original and the paint is exeptional. It shines as new and there are only two dings that I can find. Quarter sized and likely removable. The paint is 100 percent original. No accidents ever. The rims have no curb rash and the tires are matching with plenty of tread. The glass is all original and excellent with the exception of the rear window. The defrost has left a green blob at the bottom. Not visible when driving but from the outside is noticeable but not crazy offensive. I would change it. The interior is nearly flawless with the exception of two wood pieces readily available on eBay. There is also a small tear in the armrest easily repairable and the window switches are worn. I will include two switches that are mercedes and in excellent shape. I cant overstate how nice the car is. The last one I sold for 20k was not as nice. The car has stacks of mechanical records and was purchased here in Florida at Lokey Mercedes. It has been fully serviced from day one. I have thousands in service records. There are no shimmys or rattles or shakes. The climate control works as it should. It even blows out of the center vents. Only about 1 in 10 do. The transmission shifts as softly as any I have felt. The last great one I owned had 50k miles on it. I am more disappointed to have to sell this one than that. This car feels as good as any I have ever had. I have a very fair number in mind for the car and it is for sale locally. I can be reached at 813-777-7628. This car will likely sell by Monday so if you are looking for a collector quality 300CD in the very coolest and rarest of colors grab it. No disappointments here.

This W123 is probably one of the better ones I’ve seen come up for sale except for one big thing: the shifter wood surround is destroyed. I don’t understand, the rest of this car shows great for 186,000 miles and is probably going to fetch a hefty price tag. Why not spend the few hundred to find a clean piece of replacement wood to finish off the interior to make it really outstanding? That just seems really odd to me. Otherwise, the green MB-tex is very rare and I can probably count on two hands on how many I’ve seen in this color. I’m glad it is in a car this nice and hasn’t been neglected by someone who just wants to drive the wheels off this car.

I’m really curious to see where the bidding ends up for this car. Generally, the W123 coupe has always brought a premium over sedans and this one should follow that trend. It being a Florida car and the condition it is in, even with the bad wood, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it crack $10,000. You don’t see a combination like this one come up for sale often, even at all, so this one has potential to be a nice payday for the seller.

1980 Mercedes-Benz 300TD

Few things make more sense to me than a W123 300TD. In my opinion, it’s everything you might ever might need in a vehicle. Durability? This thing will probably outlive the majority of us. Practicality? You can haul enough bricks in it to finally build that brick pizza oven in the backyard you’ve always been dreaming about. Frugality? It gets 25 miles per gallon no matter what you do. Comfortable? The disintegrating horse hair seats will suck you right in with ease. I can go on and on about the wonderful W123 wagon, but you probably already know this. So what are you waiting for? Maybe this 1980 300TD for sale in California is the vehicle that finally makes sense.

We are offering up a 1980 Mercedes 300TD wagon. One owner blue and yellow California plate car. 233k original miles. Original owner passed away early 2016 and his family is selling the estate.

I am a amateur Mercedes enthusiast but I do know a little bit about Mercedes diesel. I have also had a very well known Mercedes Diesel mechanic look at the car. Engine is unbelievable! No blow by and purrs! Only pump diesel was used in this engine! The only thing we have done to the engine is a oil/filter change. Starts up quickly and runs down the road good. Drives straight and steering wheel is straight. Car is pretty impressive for almost being 40 years old.

Original owner was an electrical engineer and was his own mechanic on this Mercedes. All maintenance was performed by himself. Car has updated climate control which is a very big deal. AC and heat work. Everything seems to work on the car. Vacuum door locks work as well.

Overall my assessment of the car is that it is a true surviving California car. It seems to run and drive like a well taken care of car. I have put over 125 miles on it. While not a lot of miles, I just like to have an idea what I’m offering on eBay for the new owners benefit. Although a used car, I got that typical Mercedes diesel feeling that I could drive the car to New York and back and be fine. If you know these cars then you know how reliable they are. Car is not perfect and shows the appropriate wear of a 233k car. As you can see in the photos, just a nice survivor.

This 1980 is one of the two years that the W123 wagon was offered (the other being 1979) with the non-turbocharged OM617 5-cylinder diesel that made just 97 horsepower and 115 foot pound of torque. This isn’t the bright spot of this wagon, but at least it’s not the OM616 out of the 240D because then you’d be better off pushing this W123 down the road. This specific wagon sports the rare 737 Classicweiss (Classic White) paint without a sunroof and even more amazingly has the fix for the notoriously bad automatic climate system. Being in California it’s whole 37-year life, I don’t see any visible rust which is a major plus seeing that’s the only thing that could possibly make me pass on a car like this. One thing I did catch with this car is that it looks like the front passenger door is missing it’s interior panel. These don’t exactly fall off, so I’d be asking questions as exactly what caused that panel not to be there.

Seeing as W123 wagons aren’t getting any cheaper, $5,800 is reasonable for a non-turbo OM617 with over 200,000 miles. It’s all about body condition with these because in my opinion, anything mechanical can be replaced rather easily with a little bit of effort and a little bit more money. I’d be more comfortable with a price under $5,000 because I’ve yet to buy a used Mercedes that didn’t need $500-1,000 no matter how great the previous owner thinks they’ve cared for the car. But overall if you are looking for a long-term that will last you for the long-haul, this 1980 300TD is a strong candidate.

I’m always on the lookout for golden era Mercedes in rare colors to add to my small collection (more on that soon!). We’ve reached the point where despite millions of these cars being built and nearly all standing the test of time well, any nice one is starting to creep up in value — even more so if it’s in a color that isn’t earth tone. Today’s car that is up for sale in New York is the ultra-rare Inca Red paint that I’ve only seen on a handful of Mercedes over the years – let alone a W123 coupe.

1979 Mercedes-Benz 240D Hearse

Ever hear the old joke “he’ll be late for his own funeral?” That adage refers to the people who were driven in to their funerals in a Mercedes-Benz 240D hearse – because this thing is so slow, they literally were late to their own funeral. The W123 240D produces 67 horsepower which is slow enough in the standard sedan. Add in a hearse body (as well as a real body inside a heavy casket) and a farm tractor is starting to look like a more expedient option. This 1979 that is heading up for auction in New Mexico is a curious car with some odd things and interesting stories, so let’s try to make sense of this funeral coach.

Mega Miles: 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300D

”Those old Mercedes diesels will run forever!” That’s what I constantly hear when someone who is a ”car person” sees or hears I drive an old Mercedes diesel. Usually I just smile and nod in agreement because they don’t want to hear about valve adjustments, multiple filter changes, purges, diesel fuel additives and everything else that goes into keeping an old Mercedes diesel running forever. ”Nope, you’re right, just pour whatever liquid you want into the tank, it’ll run. Sure.” That brings me to today’s car. An OM617 diesel that is half way to running forever with only a tick over 585,000 miles. Now since you’ve heard about these cars that are capable of doing a crazy amount of miles, let’s take a look at this 1980 300D in Scottsdale, Arizona.

1980 Mercedes-Benz 280E

The enthusiast website Petrolicious posed the question if the venerable Mercedes-Benz W123 would be the last “normal” car you would ever need. I think the word normal sums up this car quite perfectly. But in a good way. That’s in contrast to a car like the Toyota Camry, which is a good example of “normal” in a bad way. The Camry is the perfect car for the non-car enthusiast. It doesn’t do anything exceptionally well, but it will be, for the most part, reliable. Many have asked for my opinion on this Toyota over the years and I always say the same thing: over 400,000 people a year can be wrong.

If it’s reliability we’re talking about, that long-standing trait of the Camry pales in comparison to what the W123 Mercedes-Benz is capable of. This 1981 280E we see here for sale near Düsseldorf, Germany will indeed last you a lifetime with proper care. Witness the number of examples that are still pressed into service on a daily basis. However, in our quest to find the best and lowest mileage examples of your favorite classics on the market, have a look at this W123 that has just over 14,000 miles on the odometer from new.

1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D

Update 1/24/2018 – nearly a year and a half later, this car is still for sale at a slightly reduced price of $6,999 – getting closer to our valuation.

Another week, another diesel Mercedes-Benz. This one has a little more rarity thanks to fewer features than what we normally see. Manual transmission, manual windows, non-turbo diesel engine, cloth seat inserts but what you do get is European lights and bumpers finished over the wonderfully period-correct Thistle Green. So if you are looking for a bare-bones W123 diesel with a little bit of European flare, then this 300D north of Philadelphia might fit the bill.

1980 Mercedes-Benz 280E

Following on to the clean 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300D from last week, here’s that car’s petrol powered cousin, a 1980 280E. While they sold the W123 with the M110 inline-6 in the US market, this 280E was a German market spec vehicle imported to the US in the 1990s. It shows just under 50,000 miles on the odometer and it shows, which makes this car barely a baby in terms of W123 speak. While this might be a target for collectors, this is a Benz that could serve as a practical classic and probably still run until you take your last breath.

1982 Mercedes-Benz 300D

There’s not much more I can say about the W123 Mercedes-Benz than I’ve already said here on GCFSB. A few words come to mind. Indestructible. Timeless. Reliable. This car was many things to many people. From motorists on the Sunset Strip who chose the 300CD coupe to the errant 200 series sedan you still see cruising unpaved roads in the far reaches of the African continent, these Mercedes made their mark. This 300D for sale in California is one of the early turbocharged five cylinder models and looks quite young despite clocking over 150,000 miles.
