2007 Audi S8 with 308,000 miles

My fascination with really high mile cars knows no bounds and today’s car is no different. This 2007 Audi S8 is a one-owner car that shows a little over 308,000 miles and looks like it did a quarter of that. How or why this happened, I have no idea. What I do know is that I absolutely shiver at the thought of maintaining an Audi V10 for over 300,000 miles. Just doing the quick math on the gas bill alone, 308,000 miles driven averaging 17 mpg, means this thirsty monster has consumed roughly $65,000 worth of gas in 12 years. The crazy thing is, all of the registration is just outside of Chicago. Naturally this assumes some kind of traveling salesperson, but of all the cars to pick, a giant V10 Audi? What is even more crazy is the condition of this D3. Just wait until you see it.

Double Take: 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

I have been featuring the GT3 RS a decent bit lately, with a few of those being the 997.1 models, so I thought I’d add in a couple of the less common colors we come across. As I’ve noted previously this model itself is one of my all-time favorite Porsches. I like the very bright Orange over Black version. As it turns out those are the most common, which is something we don’t get to say very often about an orange car.

The two we’ll see here aren’t nearly as common. However, assuming the numbers I have seen are correct, they only occupy second and third respectively on the rareness chart. The claim for most rare actually belongs to the Silver version I posted a couple of weeks ago. Nonetheless we don’t see these very often so they are always worth a look.

Let’s start with the highest priced, the very bright RS Green, which here sits with 9,078 miles on it:

2007 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG

There aren’t enough words to describe a Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG â€” both good and bad. You can probably guess the bad words, but I’m pretty high on these cars, especially the W221 chassis. I think the most impressive part is that you could have 604 horsepower and 738 ft-lb of torque in a normal four door sedan that can give you slow and gentle massage, all while being totally silent. Normally, to get that kind of power you would need to buy something Italian that is reliable and usable as a wild pack of possums. (Or maybe just buy a 911 Turbo.) Yes, you paid dearly for an S65 when new, over $200,000, but you got what you paid for. A vehicle with hyper car power that a grandmother could drive. Now that we are over a decade in to W221 S65 and they’ve reached Honda Accord levels of purchase price, is it worth rolling the dice on one? Maybe if you are a little crazy. Although this 2007 in Utah might just be the one to get.

2007 Porsche 911 GT3

This is a Speed Yellow 2007 Porsche 911 GT3, located in North Carolina, with 53,500 miles on it. As you can see, like the very wonderful GT3 RS I wrote up a few days ago it has a few miles on it. Not a ton, but enough that we know its owners have derived some joy out of it. As they should.

However, it’s not quite as perfect and worry-free as that RS. There are some flaws and those raise questions. The uncertainty they create will scare away many potential buyers. They’ve also brought with them a lower price; the lowest price I believe I’ve seen for a 997 GT3. I won’t call this post a “roll of the dice” because I’m not sure you roll the dice on a car costing more than $80K, or at least not one without deep six-figure upside, but can you live with a little less certainty?

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

This is pretty much my favorite 911. I can’t say there is any particularly great reason it’s my favorite since there are probably more rare, more iconic, and better performing 911s in existence, but since the day I first saw one I’ve been in love. Some of the appeal for me is timing and because the 997 was the first GT3 RS sold in the US. Though it obviously was not the first RS entirely. There also is something about the 997 GT3 RS’s looks that I really like and prefer over newer models and, probably not surprisingly, over the 996 GT3 RS. And it’s Orange. When I say this is my favorite 911 I don’t just mean the 997 GT3 RS in general, but specifically the Orange over Black option that we see here. I have a model of one that my wife begrudgingly allows me to display on our bookshelf. I love it.

Here we have what happens to be a really nice looking example of these great cars and to make things even better it’s an example an owner actually has driven. Imagine that!
