1983 Porsche 911SC Coupe with 7,769 Miles

Alright, a crazy-low-mileage 911. We see these from time to time and they’re always a marvel in their own special way. Seeing a 911SC with this sort of mileage is almost bewildering as I wonder how it is we got here. I certainly wouldn’t have considered these a collectible at the time, but the buyer of this final-year 1983 Porsche 911SC Coupe certainly must have. Either that or some peculiar circumstance lead to it rarely being driven early on and then after a number of years someone packed it away in storage hoping for long-term profits. Apparently that time has come.

The exterior color is Platinum Metallic, the same color Porsche used for the special Weissach Edition released in 1980. It became a standard color in the years following the Weissach’s release. Unlike the Weissach, the interior of this 911SC is a fairly standard Black. But this 911 isn’t about the color, as nice as it may be. It’s all about condition and mileage, which appear excellent and extremely low. There may also be some interesting options. More on that below.

Paint-to-sample Vesuvio Metallic 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Paint-to-sample 911s always hold their own special place. They are obviously unique, but mostly they’re just fun to see because of their utilization of colors that Porsche no longer makes available and in many cases only made available for a short period of time. When the paint-to-sample color in question is said to be the only extant example for a particular model, well, then we really take notice.

Such appears to be the case with the car here: a Vesuvio Metallic 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We’ve seen Vesuvio Metallic a few times previously. It’s a very interesting color that shifts and changes hue under different lighting and in the shade. It’s also a unique color in its own right showing a purplish charcoal combination that few other colors replicate. It would seem to make for a good PTS option. Yet this is the first time I’ve seen it selected for such duty. Maybe it’s not as desirable as I might think. Or maybe Porsche themselves have rarely allowed it as one of the PTS options. I don’t know, but it certainly looks good here!

2017 Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet

Last week I checked out the unfortunate CL550 Cabriolet that made no sense to me in a number ways. Today, we have something that in practice is very similar to that car, but totally on the other end of the spectrum when it comes to quality. This is the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. The ultra-luxury S-Class convertible that rivals the Rolls-Royce Dawn in everything, including price. This Maybach S650 Cabriolet is a S65 AMG Cabriolet that keeps all of its power and adds another level of luxury and most importantly for this car, exclusivity. Just 300 of these cars will be produced by Mercedes and just 75 of them coming to North America. But for this price tag, is it worth it?

One of the more captivating baffling options in the used performance wagon market must surely be the C5 Audi. Despite the reputation for 100% metaphysical certitude that they’ll fail – probably catastrophically, they’re fan favorites. Often as a retort to internet commentaries that they’re not reliable, actual owners will chime in, demanding respect and steadfastly assuring the audience that the Allroad’s reputation is undeserved.

‘It’s been 100% reliable!’ they’ll insist.

Of course, the recipe to actually make it reliable involves major reworking of the engine and suspension. And, sometimes the electronics, too. On top of that, it turns out that various people’s definition of ‘reliable’ varies greatly – especially for Audi owners. Basically, to be deemed ‘unreliable’, an Audi must first assassinate a major public figure, then make a Star Wars reboot featuring only Jar-Jar Binks, then kneel during the National Anthem (easy to do, as most have failed suspension on at least one corner), and finally when you turn the key the engine does the action sequence out of a Michael Bay Transformer movie. If, and only if, those conditions are met will fanatics finally fail to reply to the assertion that the Allroad just isn’t a reliable car.

But, it’s cool. And so you probably want one, even though you know it’ll bankrupt you. So the smart way to buy an Allroad is to not buy an Allroad:

2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG with 21,000 miles

Earlier this week I checked out a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet with just 6,700 miles on it with a price tag on it that had me running the other way. Today, we have another low mileage Mercedes, but this one is a little different style and a lot more power. This is a 2005 E55 AMG for sale in the Bay Area with just a little over 21,000 miles. It’s painted in the awesome Midnight Blue with black leather interior and my favorite trim, Birdseye Black Maple. Now that most of these W211 E55s have passed their 10th birthday, these supercharged sedans haven started to get really cheap compared to their original $75,000 price tag when new. But as for this car? Sadly you won’t be able to snag it up for $11,995. Not even close.
