1988 Volkswagen Quantum GL5

Love the recently featured Audi Coupe GTs and Audi 4000 Quattros? Well, if they’re quickly getting out of your price range there is an option few think of that combines the GT and 4000 into a unique package. Although the 4000 front wheel drive was offered early on with a 5-cylinder engine, after 1982 if you wanted that rally-bred inline-5 you had to get a Coupe GT – or did you? The revised and slightly restyled Quantum offered the 5-cylinder engine as well in “GL5” form, both front and all wheel drive. They’re rare to find in good shape and most hold out for the Syncro wagons, but if you’re looking for a unique daily driver Volkswagen this GL5 in Tornado Red may just fit the bill:

1988 BMW M6

1980s BMW M cars have been stars on the rise over the past few years. It is hard to believe these days, but there was a point in the not-too-distant past where you could buy a E30 M3 for below $10,000 – and a nice one at that! Not only that, but E28 M5s have been suddenly for sale in the high teens for even worn copies and the venerable M6 is rare to see much below $20,000 in reasonable shape. What is an enthusiast to do? Well, sometimes that means you need to take a bit of a risk if you want to enter the wonderful world of M, and today I’ve got just the car to roll the dice on – a Christmas red 1988 M6:

1979 Mercedes-Benz 280E

The diesel-powered W123 Mercedes-Benz is a favorite of ours here at GCFSB. Their iconic style and durability has won motorists the world over, including us. However, this 1979 280E is one rarely seen stateside, packing the M110 2.8 liter gasoline inline-6 engine under the hood. Does the petrol engine take away the mystique of the durable diesel or is it more attractive given the added power? Whatever your opinion, this is a downright clean California car in need of a good home this holiday season.

1977 Volkswagen Scirocco

In lieu of the normal “Tuner Tuesday” posts, today I decided to write up two home-brew specials in the likeness of many tuners. We started with the 1968 BMW 1600 S14 swap, a rare to see model with some really great looking and fun-increasing modifications. But I think the cake might go to this afternoon’s Christmas Eve special, a 1977 Volkswagen Scirocco that has more period modifications than you’ll usually see – but manages to pull it off really well! That can’t always be said for 1980s-era modifications in general, as quite a few were in questionable taste. That’s part of what makes this Scirocco so special and neat to see, if seeing an old Scirocco wasn’t neat enough. We’ve gotten to see two this week, the all original and mint condition 1981 Scirocco and today’s tuned example:

1968 BMW 1600 S14 swap

The BMW 2002 is a legendary car that defined the small sports sedan category by most accounts. Compact, rear wheel drive, and with enough power to have fun, you could drive the 2002 at 9/10ths most of the time without crashing at breakneck speed. Try pushing today’s cars to their limits; imagine if you could get a new M4 into a 4 wheel drift on an exit ramp – what speed would you have to be going? Probably faster than the original top speed of the 2002 is my guess, and the ability to drive a slow car fast is what makes some older cars so appealing. But for some people, that base small sedan just isn’t enough, and they go about upgrading the original car. I’m certainly not opposed to this, as it’s something I did with my Audi Coupe – take a later model, higher output motor that is in the same character as the original motor and Viola! Instant happiness. I can only imagine the smiles that this S14 motored 1968 1600 generates then:
