1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E

Every now and then I present pieces of information that relate to Mercedes-Benz history that is somewhat significant, but mostly just stuff that might be useful for one specific moment in what might be years worth of time. One of those pieces of information has to do with the 1993 300E. Conventional thinking would lead you to believe that this car came with the 3.0 inline-6 that Mercedes has been putting in these cars and other models for years. Not the case for the 1993 300E. This car, badged the 300E, could be bought with either a M104 2.8 liter inline-6 or a M104 3.2 liter inline-6. Why they offered two different engines just for this year, I don’t know. In 1994, the model changed to the E320 and all of those cars got the 3.2 liter while the 2.8 liter moved to the then-new W202 C280. How can you tell if a car is a 2.8 or 3.2? Well, if memorizing VINs isn’t your thing, the trunk should have a 2.8 badge on the opposite side of 300E badge. Of course, some people removed those badges for a cleaner look or just didn’t want people to know you didn’t spring the extra cash for the 3.2. Another tell is that that all 3.2 liter cars have headlight wipers but only some 2.8 liter cars had them too. You can conclude that if a car is missing the headlight wipers it is a 2.8 liter so at least that is one sure fire way. Today, I actually have a 1993 300E with the 2.8 liter and immediately you wouldn’t you know as it doesn’t have the 2.8 badge. Luckily, this car’s tell is missing those headlight wipers so we can conclude it is in fact a 2.8 liter example. Isn’t all this useless information wonderful?

1994 BMW 325iS M-Design

When I first came across this car, just like with Rob’s GT3 yesterday I was pretty sure I’d seen it before. The 1994 BMW 325iS M-Design was produced in very limited numbers, and this one was for sale after another I wrote up fairly recently with similar miles:

However, a quick check of the VINs revealed they’re different chassis; this one is 386, produced 52 prior to the last one we looked at (438). So let’s refresh ourselves on what made the M-Design 3-series special.

Basically, this car was the precursor to the U.S.-spec M3. BMW teased its release with an American version of the Clubsport Coupe; you got the M-Tech body kit, mirrors, steering wheel and shift knob, along with the Anthracite M cloth (0506) and an Alpine White exterior. BMW equipped BBS RC 2-piece wheels with forged centers too. In all, it made for a pretty package even if it was no more potent than a standard E36. Fans claim only 150 were imported which seems about right, though BMW doesn’t have official importation numbers.

Last time around, though the condition was very good the general consensus was that an actual M3 was a better deal at the asking price. How about today?

2015 Porsche 911 GT3

When I first came across this Signal Yellow 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 I could have sworn I had seen it before and already had posted it. The selling dealer looked familiar (and not just familiar as a dealer, but familiar for having this particular car for sale) and the overall look of the car looked familiar. I was sort of right.

The car I was thinking of was not in fact this GT3, but a Signal Yellow Cayman GT4. I assume you can see the resemblance. Given that the seller is the same I do wonder if the original owner of both cars was the same person, or maybe the owner of this dealer just really likes Signal Yellow. Regardless, pretty much everything I said about that GT4 applies to this GT3. Signal Yellow is one of Porsche’s best historic colors and it looks great in most any application.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E

The Mercedes-Benz 400E/E420 is lost in the world of W124s where 500Es and Cabriolets get all the attention with their astronomical asking prices and the lowly 300E/E320 limp along on their 8th owners begging to be put out of their misery. These cars were no slouch and still can hold their own 275 horsepower and 300 ft·lb of torque. They aren’t super sedans by any means, but feel significantly faster than their numbers on paper. Now, the 400E/E420 flys under the radar and is often unloved because if you are going to buy a M119-powered car, the W140 and R129 or maybe even W210 might be better choices in the long run if you are going to put some money into it. Today, we have a 1993 400E up for sale in Tampa, Florida that looks to be one of the best examples I’ve seen come up for sale in a long time. Even better, this one comes in with a price to match it.

1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe M491

Last weekend I posted a 911SC Turbo-look Coupe that was of interest to me almost entirely for how it might compare with the car we see here: a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe equipped with the M491 package. The 911SC was a non-factory conversion performed by one of its early owners utilizing the body, suspension and braking from an ’88 930. In effect, it recreated the M491 package for the 911SC. There are a whole host of factors to be considered with that car, but ultimately it represented a potential opportunity at getting into a Turbo-look 911 for less cost. While I thought the price was a bit too high, it appears it has sold so I guess someone saw the value to be had.

With significant mileage differences between them this M491 Carrera doesn’t make for a direct comparison with the SC, but the price increase is easily apparent. For some, however, that non-factory Turbo-look never really would have been under consideration. It is the real thing they’re after. Here we have the real thing. It’s one of the earlier models when quite a few more were built so it’ll be less expensive than a later G50-equipped Coupe. It’s said to be well documented and in its current condition it looks great!
