I’m kind of mesmerized by this shade of blue. The color is Tahoe Blue Metallic and here it adorns a 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet for sale in Florida with 63,755 miles on it. We’ve featured Tahoe Blue Metallic before, but don’t see it often. It’s a rare color and wasn’t available for very many years. What really has me awed is the way it possesses so much color even while being photographed in the shade. It really pops and as someone who has always been a big fan of blue in general it’s a great version of the color. It won’t snap your head around the way Riviera Blue might, but it won’t blind you either. It reminds me of a richer version of Iris Blue from the ’80s and is just really pretty.

With the January auctions approaching I always like to check in on what sorts of interesting cars will be crossing the blocks this year. Even though this auction is still a couple weeks away, I couldn’t resist posting this now. I could be wrong, but I think this is the only air-cooled 911 model I have never featured. It’s one of the rarest 911 models there is. We’ve featured the North American only Turbo S Package car previously, of which there were only 17 produced. For this model there are even fewer.

This is a Japanese market 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo S Slantnose, also known as the X83 Turbo S. And, yes, I do mean Slantnose and not Flatnose. Of the various markets only Japan received the 935-derived slantnose that was commonly found on the 930. The rest of the world received either the 968-derived flatnose or the standard 964 front of the Turbo S Package. Only 10 Slantnose Turbo S were produced, all nearly identical with Polar Silver Metallic exterior and Black interior. The biggest difference among the 10 was the choice of rear wing: you could have either the standard Turbo rear spoiler or for a little extra money you could choose the spoiler from the 3.8 Carrera RS. 4 buyers chose the RS wing.

I have never seen one for sale. Until now. This one will be up for auction at Gooding and Company’s Scottsdale Auctions on January 19 & 20.

1992 Porsche 911 Turbo

I still feel as if I come across way too few of these early 964 Turbos. Compared to its predecessor the 930 it’s as if they don’t exist. While the later 3.6 liter Turbo is more rare I feel like I see them more often. Or, at least, this is all how I perceive the whole thing. It may be more a matter of coming across examples I like rather than coming across them in particular, but I’m not sure. I like this one and whether there are few of these for sale or simply few of them I actually like for sale the result is the same: opportunities for a nice 3.3-liter 964 Turbo don’t come around all that often. They certainly don’t come along often in brighter colors.

This one checks all of those boxes: a Guards Red 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in New York, with Cashmere Beige interior and a mere 16,427 miles on it.

I’m starting to wonder if I’ve missed something with the 964 market. I’m speaking here of the standard models like the one we see here, not the various ultra-rare models that can command extremely high prices. Asking prices just seem way too high. The 964 indeed has become a more desirable model relative to its place among the air-cooled models only a few years ago, yet still while the rest of the market takes a few steps backward the asking prices for the 964 continue to go up. Perhaps it is because of those ultra-rare models and the significant premiums they command; sellers see a Turbo S fetching nearly $1M and think their Carrera 2 most certainly must be worth more than it is. Perhaps it’s the influx of RoW cars and the premiums those are commanding. I don’t know. Regardless, here again we have one that quite simply appears to be priced a good deal higher than it should be.

This is an Amazon Green Metallic 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe, located in Pennsylvania, with Tan leather interior and 116,810 miles on it. To be clear, I like this 964. I think it’d probably make for a nice addition to anyone’s Porsche family. It looks in pretty good shape for the age and mileage and the color combination is a very attractive one – not eye catching and head turning, but subtle and quite pretty. I just don’t think it’s a $60K 911.

I’ve seen this car for sale for a little while and have kept meaning to come back to feature it. There’s just so much to take in initially and I’ve pulled up the listing a few times. It’s obviously far from anything original and is an extensive build, though it does possess interesting historical characteristics that should give it appeal beyond the typical custom build. It’s very bright, probably pretty loud and raucous, and sure to be very fast.

So let’s get the basics down. Effectively it sounds like this build began as a way to find a home for a very special engine: a 3.8 liter single turbo flat-6 producing 550 hp developed by Andial that served as the engine in a Pike’s Peak winning 964 Carrera 4 back in the ’90s. To house the engine a 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo with around 90K miles on it was found and work began. Those are excellent pieces to build upon. A suitable paint was needed so the designers reached back to the ’60s to source one of Porsche’s earliest pastels to show up on the 911: Pastel Blue. Combine all of that with a whole host of parts to improve upon the suspension and braking, along with a new interior, and you get the final product we see here.
