Way back in 1980, Porsche decided to cook up a little special edition model for its wildly popular 911SC. It was pitched as an edition to honor the Porsche Motorsports team working in Weissach and I suppose it was an honor well deserved seeing as Porsche dominated nearly every racing series they enter in the 1970s. It was named the “Weissach” and just 468 units were produced. Half were painted Metallic Black, the other half in Platinum Metallic. Other special touches were a flexible lip on the front air dam, whale tail rear spoiler, Bilstein shocks, color-matched Fuchs wheels, and Doric Grey leather upholstery with burgundy accents. MSRP came in at around $32,000, which wasn’t a premium at all compared to the standard 911SC.
Today, we have one of those examples up for sale in Texas finished in Platinum Metallic with an impressive 106,000 miles on the odometer. Worth the buy if you are looking for a driver?
Update 1/17/2019: the seller of this clean 924 apparently hasn’t had any luck selling it, and it’s back on eBay with a $4,500 asking price today.

Another 924? Sure, but there were so many special models during the production run that popped up that they could occupy most of a week alone! Recently, I’ve looked at a ’87 924S, a modded ’78, a Carrera GT replica and a clean ’80 Turbo.
Today is one that’s slightly different in that, at least on the surface, it’s not a special edition. However, what is interesting about this car is that it appears to have several of the items from the ’81 Weissach Commemorative Edition. One of the 2,100 1981 924s imported, the Platinum color, mudflaps and two-tone ATS wheels seem to match the limited model. Is it one, after all?
While cars from the 1980s are really starting to stretch their legs, most cars from the 1970s seem to lay in a no-man’s land of value, minus of course Porsche 911s. There’s been some recent appreciation for the R107 but generally the cars that are heavily valued are the last of the run 560SLs from the late 1980s, so while that was a late 1960s design it’s not really a 1970s car at that point. Go through the ranks though – with a few exceptions, the 1970s equivalents are undervalued compared to their successors. W116s are cheaper than W126s, E12s and E21s are budget BMWs relative to clean E28 and E30 pricing, early 924s and 928s are close to being given away judged against the last of the run cars and Audi? Go find one from the 1970s. The one area where 1970s products currently outshine their replacements is on a limited scale, but at Volkswagen clean 1970s models tend to be valued more highly than those from the 1980s. It’s easy to see why in most cases; swallowtail Rabbits are just plain prettier than the later Westmoreland cars, the Bus, Thing and Campervan models captured the last of the 1960s spirit and are so ugly they’re cute, and then there’s the Scirocco. Modest underpinnings it might have had, but in one of the most brilliant strokes of design from Giugiaro the lines are pure magic:
