Wednesday Wheels Roundup

It’s a rainy day here in New England, so I spent some time finding my favorite wheels on Ebay. Most of these are period option or aftermarket wheels, but all of them are pretty cool. I especially love the BMW Ronal wheels, the ATS AMG wheels in nearly new shape and the amazing BBS magnesium Bugatti EB110 wheels. Which are your favorite?

$1500 OBO cash in my hand (after fees) will get you:
1) four NOS ready to use gen1 AMG “road wheel” style wheels.
2) four used, Mercedes logo caps
3) shipping to the continental US.

This type of wheel was sold in the 80’s at Mercedes dealerships as aftermarket wheel options, but I believe these specific wheels were not made by MB or AMG. There is no AMG casting on the wheel itself. Several permutations of this style wheels were made by companies like “Penta”, ATS, Ronal, Melber, etc. However, comparing side-by-side with an Authentic ATS AMG Gen1 version of the same, I was not able to tell any difference in the wheels other than the AMG and ATS markings. The Penta, Melber, and Ronal versions are visibly different (and less appealing in my opinion).

I test fit one of these on a 1990 420sel (gen2) with slightly protruding brakes and the BLACK one I tested fit right on, while one of a SILVER set in also have hit the brake caliper. (I have a set in BLACK too, which I had professionally refurbished.). It is possible that some minor grinding of the caliper casting could be required to make these fit a gen2 w126. So I know these wheels will fit the following models, but can not guarantee a fit on a gen2 w126.

I have many other wheels and a good relationship with my local wheel shop, sportscartire.com. They were apparently the first wheel shop on the east coast to be able to repair badly damaged wheels. Mercedes enthusiasts all over the country are now sending their wheels to this shop now based on my recommendations and their great experiences with them. So if you are willing to spend the extra money, any wheel repair or refurbishing you’d like can be done here if you don’t like something (color? / finish?, etc) about any of the wheels I have for sale.
