1971 Porsche 911S Targa

I won’t proclaim this as the greatest 911 in the world or anything of that sort, but this 1971 Porsche 911S Targa does check a lot of the boxes for what we might look for in an early 911 when not looking for absolutely pristine collector-quality condition. It is coming out of long-term ownership as the current owner has had it since 1974 and it is in mostly original condition. It is numbers matching per the CoA and has had one repaint in its original color of Gold Metallic. The interior is mostly original with only the carpets having been replaced and shows a nice looking set of sport seats. The color itself is an uncommon one and certainly has its fans. Overall everything looks in very good shape and the level of originality here appears quite good. Oh, and of course it is the highly desirable 911S.

It doesn’t pop off the page the way some early 911s do, but it definitely shows as one of the better and probably more original examples we see.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL with 1,500 miles

Last week I looked at a 2008 Mercedes-Benz S550 with little over 2,700 miles on it and quite honestly, wasn’t all that impressed. Maybe because it was a modern car that was only 10 years old, but the low miles didn’t really blow me away all that much. Today, we have a 1985 380SL that has just 1,500 miles on it. That’s it, exactly 1,500. I don’t know why or how this car only managed 1,500 miles, but that’s what I’m seeing. The problem is, like the S550 from last week, this car just isn’t doing it for me.

1985 Audi Coupe GT

1985 Audi Coupe GT

I’m certain there’s a sect of the readership that gets pretty sick of me droning on about the Audi Coupe GT. I’ll acknowledge a very large soft spot for this relatively unloved Audi oddity. But it’s Father’s Day, and so as a treat to myself I’d like to look at another. And, I think you’d like to look at it too.

As we write up cars constantly, for me there’s always a point of thinking ‘Right! That’s it. There can’t be another clean original one out there!’ Because, at some point that certainly must be true. How many completely original, low mile and low ownership examples can there be out there. Who, for 33 years, would care for a car so much that basically everyone else gave up on when it was five years old?

Yet occasionally they turn up, and here’s a prime example. According to the seller, this 1985 GT has turned just 67,000 miles and he picked it up when GTs were still on dealer lots. Alpine White with the unique blue tweed interior and matching blue dashboard, he obviously loved the B2 as much as I do:

1961 Mercedes-Benz 300d Adenauer

About a month ago I checked out a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 600 that is the crème de la crème when it comes to flagship Mercedes. It gets all the press, all the attention and rightfully so. But often overlooked is the predecessor of the 600, the 300d Adenauer. I’ve checked these cars out in the past and they don’t come up for sale to the public all that often thanks to their age and rarity. Personally, I think they are one of the coolest Mercedes ever made thanks to their distinctive style with the great waterfall grille and pillar-less profile. This is a car with presence. You don’t blend in with the pack with this car. When an Adenauer drives down the road, you see it coming. The best part about this car? It’s not as expensive as you would think.

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

This is going to be a slightly peculiar post for me. I wouldn’t normally think too much of this 911 and would ignore it, but it has one very particular redeeming quality that makes me think it is worth a closer look.

We’re talking about performance for your dollar. That’s not an unusual feature of the 996TT. These have long been unloved by much of the Porsche community and as such values have been much lower than their performance should warrant. To really maximize your performance value you’d seek one with the X50 package and, of course, a manual transmission. Reasonable mileage and cool colors just enhance the allure. However, the cat’s been out of the bag for a while now and those cars are being priced higher. The value is diminishing.

Which brings me here. This 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe pretty much possesses none of those features. So why are we here? Well, there is a way in which all of the aspects of this 911 I normally would construe as a negative have come together to create a positive. The asking price looks to be much more reasonable. Yet it still looks in good condition:
