Last week I looked at a really cool 1992 Mercedes-Benz 250TD that was an European import that I’d love to own to rack up the miles. Today, we have another European-spec W124 estate although this one is still in Europe and has the steering wheel on the other side. This 1990 230TE resides in Northern England and as you might have noticed from the photo, this wagon wasn’t used as the workhorse that most were subjected to.

A little over a month ago I looked at a 1999 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG Estate that, thanks to Canada’s 15-year import law, was ready to be enjoyed by our friends to the north. Today, I have big brother E55 AMG Estate that looks to be literally fresh off the boat from Japan. This 2001 shows 47,000 miles and looks to be missing the most important W210 characteristic: rust. Although much like the W211 AMG Estate, you’ll pay a premium for that extra cargo room.

3 CommentsI will admit I have not always been a fan of the 991. The design took me a long time to warm up to even as I looked at the Boxster and Cayman and thought both had improved tremendously. I’ve read some criticisms of Porsche’s designs and their increasing similarity and I don’t entirely disagree with those assessments, but where I think it has improved the look of the Cayman/Boxster I have not been as much a fan of the 911.
Ever so slowly that perception is changing and I have gradually taken to the design – whether because of increased familiarity or something else, I don’t know. A couple of recent examples caught my eye so I thought I would specifically go on the hunt for a nice Carrera S to feature. As I did so I soon realized that it’s really hard to find a 991 with a manual transmission. PDK has seemingly taken over. I do understand why that is to some degree, but some of us still would like the involvement of shifting gears ourselves and I was struck by the relative lack of manuals.
I kept looking and my search did finally pay off: here we have a very subtly pretty paint-to-sample Dark Olive Metallic 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe with just 3K miles on it and that all important manual transmission.

Comments closedThe majority if the time I check out a Mercedes-Benz W126 it is either a 560SEL or a 300SD. For good reason though as if you wanted the ultimate luxury car short of Rolls-Royce/Bentley, you went with the 560SEL. If you wanted a car to literally last you a generation, you bought the OM617-powered 300SD. But if you wanted a compromise of both models, Mercedes gave you that option towards the end of the W126 life-span from 1988 to 1991 with the 300SE. It was the tried-and-true M103 3.0 inline-6 paired to a standard wheelbase sedan that saved you over $20,000 if you selected the 300SE for $53,000 versus the $74,000 you would have paid for the 560SEL. Now that the majority of these cars are sneaking up on 30 years-old, you don’t often see them in really nice condition. Fortunately, this example painted in the rare Willow Green up for bid in Connecticut is in really nice condition and probably won’t cost you a ton of money either.
