2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, depending on how you look at it, Mercedes-Benz has only graced the United States market with one AMG estate car. Thankfully, it was more than one generation starting with the S211 E-Class and continuing with the S212 and now up to the current S213. Of course, we got AMGs in every SUV, including a R-Class for whatever reason, but when it comes to regular estate cars, the E-Class was it. No C-Class estates, no CLA shooting brakes and certainly no CLS shooting brakes either. Even with the multiple generations of E wagon AMGs, good luck finding one for a reasonable price as even the most desolate ones still bring close to $30,000.

Today, I came across a really nice W204 C63 AMG Estate up for sale at one of my favorite dealers in Europe that is as clean as all the other cars I feature from them. This 2009 painted in Palladium Silver Metallic has all the right lines and curves to keep that aggressive AMG stance and have future classic written all over it. I just wish they brought them stateside.

2009 Audi TTS Coupe

Recently I’ve written up a string of BMW 135is. A great car and likely future collector, the turbocharged E8x packs a mean punch and stands apart from the crowd, yet is just luxurious enough to make you feel quite special even when the throttle isn’t on the floor. But the BMW wasn’t without competition in the marketplace back in 2009. That competition emerged in the form of the new TTS package. Now, while Audi had made some pretty quick TTs up to that point, none had ever really been considered on par as a driver’s car with what typically emerged from Munich. But the new TTS shifted the balance of performance towards Ingolstadt:

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

Probably one of the most overlooked or even forgotten supercars of the last decade is the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss. Lots of people thought it was only a concept car or maybe didn’t even know this car exists. That is totally understandable because only 75 of these cars exist and its lack of a windshield doesn’t scream factory production car. The quick backstory on the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss is that it is obviously based off the SLR but with totally radical styling done by Korean designer Yoon Il-hun. This car still has a bite to back up its bark with a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph. The only way to obtain one of these cars was to be a current SLR owner and write a check for an even $1,000,000. If you are wondering why you’ve never seen one of these cruising around Beverly Hills or South Beach, Miami, it’s because they were never sold in America so a trip to Monaco is in order if you want to see one of these trying to squeeze into a parking spot surrounded by a crowd of people filming it. The good news is that if you were thinking about importing one to the United States, it is possible with the proper paperwork and even more money. Want to import this example for sale in Germany? Bring a pen with a fine tip on it so you can fit all the zeros inside the little box on the check.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

How much does it matter to have a unique car? This is the question I was left with during the search that ended with this 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe.

I had set myself a task: I wanted to find a 997.2 Carrera S with manual transmission and I wanted it to be in an interesting specification. I also hoped it wouldn’t cost too much. I didn’t have much trouble with the 997.2 Carrera S aspect. The manual transmission did eliminate quite a few options since a lot of them seem to have PDK. After that things became much trickier. They’re kind of all the same with a couple basic exterior and interior color options. There are a lot of 997s out there though so I kept looking. And to a degree I’m still looking. Ultimately I was left with that question about the degree of uniqueness.

I feature a decent number of black on black classic 911s. I like them a lot and never really find myself wondering about whether they are unique enough. Due to lower original production numbers and the effects of time pretty much any classic 911 is unique. There are certainly those that are far more unique, but still a good 911SC or 3.2 Carrera is a worthy find regardless of spec.

While understandable that seemed unfair to what are surely a large number of very good modern 911s. These cars are faster, more comfortable, and overall easier to live with on a daily basis. They are in most all regards phenomenal cars that I think many of us would be very happy owning. They may not be as visceral or engaging as certain classic cars; their electronic wizardy will cover up plenty of your mistakes. That doesn’t mean they aren’t fun.

Right Hooker Week: 2009 Audi RS6 Avant

You want power? When Cosworth slapped a few turbos onto Audi’s venerable 4.2 liter V8 for the C5 RS6, that’s what you got. 450 stampeding horsepower and 428 lb ft. of torque meant that in the early 2000s it was the model to beat. But AMG and BMW M quickly caught up and surged past the C5’s power output – even when Audi upped it with the “Plus” model to 469 hp.

The launch of a new RS6 based upon the C6 platform allowed Audi some room to expand the model’s engine output by literally expanding the engine: now 10 cylinders displaced 5.0 liters. Straddled by two turbochargers again, the second generation RS6’s power output leapt into a new league, with an almost unfathomable 571 horsepower and 479 ft. of torque. The C6 is a heavy car, but it was capable of 911-scaring 0-60 runs and could top 170 mph with ease.

What’s amazing is that Audi’s replacement for this car, the C7, moved to the new twin-turbo V8 4.0T motor. More power right? Well, not so fast; it actually produces about 11 horsepower less than the peak performance of the V10, though I’ll grant that the additional gears and greater torque mean it’s a functionally quicker car (as if it needed to be). Well, quicker than a stock one, at least, because this particular RS6 Avant has been ‘slightly’ upgraded to north of 700 horsepower.
