2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss

$_4 (1)

Until recently, Mercedes-Benz could be considered a conservative automotive company. Occasionally they would drop a bombshell, releasing a peculiar beast such as the 300SEL 6.3 or Porsche influenced 500E/E500. The tie up with McLaren to produce the SLR didn’t seem too out of the ordinary, given the collaboration of the two concerns in Formula 1 racing. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was a bit of a 300SL revival, with its doors that swung vertically forward, two-seat layout and grilles on both front fenders. Mercedes had done supercars like this before, but no one could anticipate the special edition that was coming. The SLR Stirling Moss.

Named after the famed British racing driver and built to commemorate Mercedes’ participation in the famed Mille Miglia race, the SLR Stirling Moss was a purpose built, open-roofed hooligan. This car was a true speedster with no windscreen or roof, and shared little externally with the SLR Coupe and Roadster. A split cockpit and roll hoops completed the look, with a 640 horsepower, supercharged V8 provided the motivation. Available only to former SLR owners, only 75 examples would be built. For those wanting a rare and rather current collectable, you can find this Mercedes on offer in Frankfurt, Germany.

2009 Audi TTS

Please give a warm welcome to our newest writer at GCFSB, Andrew Maness. Andrew is active with his own page over at Jalopnik, The Road Less Driven. Welcome Andrew!

Given that I am currently a card carrying member of ACLA (Audi Club Los Angeles) and I am about to put my B7 S4 Avant up for sale, I am frequently asked “well what kind of Audi are you going to get next?”. It’s a bit presumptive on the persons part to assume that just because I’m a club member that I’m going to stick with the brand. True I do have a lot of love for Quattro driven vehicles but since moving to Southern California from Vermont that love has wained a bit over the last 6 years.

I fell in love with Audi because they’re the oddball of the German brands and I like things that are different. These days their vehicles have lost some of that character but I suppose that’s to be expected given how much the brand has grown in the last decade. 2009 marked a turning point for the brand as that’s when they killed off arguably the best body style they ever had (B7 pride!) and dropped their partnership with Recaro. However 2009 wasn’t all bad news as they also offered an S model of the TT coupe for the first time. I’ve always had a soft spot for the TT ever since Tom Cruise spun one off a cliff in MI:2 and the second generation body style is one of my favorite Audi designs. It looks especially good in white but one must resist the urge to “stromtrooper” the vehicle. Black wheels are overrated people, trust me, been there done that. I would however support powder coating the signature TTS gas cap, that’s a tasteful modification.

2009 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI

Lw_800
It is with a slight bit of envy that I’ve noticed that each Jetta Sportwagen I pass in the Bay Area has the little TDI emblem on the back. It is the mark of the modern young suburban professional family that is environmentally friendly but doesn’t quite have the cash or ostentatiousness to buy a Tesla. When the Sportwagen TDI first came out, there were waitlists here and even today they hold their value remarkably well, with low-mileage examples demanding anywhere from the high teens to the mid-$20ks. To find one for cheaper than that, you’re usually looking at high-mileage commuters or dealing with rebuilt titles, but every once in a while you can find a middle-grounder like today’s 2009 model that won’t break the bank.

With 80k miles, DSG, and a 4-year warranty this silver Sportwagen is a great all-around commuter or roadtripper for a nice price.

Tuner Tuesday Turbo Quattro Coupes: 2004 TT 3.2 quattro HPA Turbo and 2009 R8 4.2 Heffner Twin Turbo

When they launched the original Quattro, Audi redefined how performance could be packaged. With supercar performance but day to day practicality, the Quattro established a niche that made Audi unique amongst not only German manufacturers, but indeed the automotive world. Since then, however, the idea of all-wheel drive and turbocharged platforms have spread not only to sister companies Porsche and Volkswagen, but indeed to Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Opel and even outside Germany to Japan. So Audi once again redefined its packaging; in the case of the TT, they brought expensive styling to the masses, and in the case of the R8, they brought supercar performance and packaging to a 911 budget. But it’s not just Audi that has raised its game; tuning firms are held to much higher standards then they were in the 1980s. Go back and look at some early Callaway turbo setups, for example, and you’ll see what was cutting edge in the 1980s – levels of fit and finish that just aren’t acceptable today, along with driving characteristics not suitable to most owners. Computerized engine management has transformed what is possible in the tuning world to the point where today’s packages often retain OEM-levels of driveability with otherworldly performance on tap. Two great examples of this can be found in HPA’s turbocharged Audi TT and Heffner’s twin-turbocharged Audi R8:

4WD Week: 2009 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG “Le Tech Bigfoot”

The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen has a reputation that precedes it. Around the world, this truck has been known for its superior off-road capability, in no small part due to its three locking differentials. As a result, it has become a favorite of emergency services and militaries the world over. In the US, however, the G Wagen has a bit of a mixed reputation. I’ve always been a fan of the beast. Those who know me tend to shake their head in disbelief, as many friends who are non-automotive enthusiasts can’t understand who would pay good money for such an ugly thing, as some have called it. For me, however, the beauty of this vehicle lies in its functionality. While many Americans view the G Wagen as an accessory for the rich and famous, it sells this truck short on its history, longevity and purpose in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. This has been the longest produced vehicle to wear the Mercedes-Benz badge, now going on 34 years.

This particular 2009 G55 AMG for sale in Texas has had a number of alterations, including a lifted suspension, knobbier tires and slimmer bumpers handy for traversing those steep inclines. The modifications may seem a bit crass given the luxury intentions of the AMG G Class, but this is one seriously capable off-road machine.

At the current asking price, we’re well over the original MSRP of a stock G55 AMG, which was just a touch over $100,000. While the modifications included on this G55 are not cheap, only the very well heeled with extra money lying around to spend on a play toy might go for something like this. Even a normal G Wagen isn’t ideally suited to everyday use, but at least it’s conceivable to employ it on the school run. However, if you used this to pick up the kids, rest assured your child will make a lot of new friends who just want to have a go in this beast.

Motorsport Monday Part 2: 2009 Porsche Cayman S Interseries

The Porsche Cayman always gets a bit of a bad rap as the Porsche for those who can’t afford a 911. To be honest, there’s a lot to like about this mid-engined sports coupe, most notably its on-track performance. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by track day enthusiasts and professional racers. Want proof? How about this 2009 Cayman S for sale in Ohio replete with Jägermeister livery.

Carter featured a similar 2006 Cayman S set up for the track last week. That car was almost $35,000 cheaper than this particular example. This one has less miles and an infinitely cooler livery, so it depends on what you’re looking for. Similar money will certainly net you a 911 set up for the track from multiple generations of the breed, but this is a fairly new, lightly used car looked after by well know specialists. If you want to grab people’s attention on the track, there are few better liveries to do it with than this one.

Tuner Tuesday Part 2: 2009 BMW M5 6 Speed Dinan

509

This 2009 BMW M5 isn’t really a full Dinan model, but rather a desirable car which has undergone some factory-approved Dinan modifications. Purists rejoiced when the manual option was re-added to the M5, but few seem to come up for sale. This particular model looks just about showroom fresh in metallic black hearkening back to it’s Grandfather E28. But what resides under the hood of this monster is decidedly not from an E28; with nearly double the cylinders and double the horsepower, these M5s will and can take on just about anything you can bring to it. The manual replaces the jerky-at-low-speeds and harsh shifting (not to mention expensive to service) SMG transmission, making the black interior that much more inviting:

509

Year: 2009
Model: M5
Engine: 5.0 liter V10
Transmission: 6-speed
Mileage: 65,188 mi
Price: $39,995

EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF A WELL CARED FOR M5, 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION, ALL DINAN ENHANCEMENTS PURCHASED AND INSTALLED AT BMW OF BRIDGEPORT TOTALING IN EXCESS OF $11,000. (INVOICE INCLUDED) DINAN HIGH FLOW THROTTLE BODIES, DINAN HIGH FLOW MASS AIR METER, DINAN INTAKE ASSEMBLIES, DINAN FREE FLOW EXHAUST, DINAN STAGE 3 SOFTWARE, HEADS UP DISPLAY, NAVIGATION, COMFORT ACCESS, COLD WEATHER, MICHELIN PS2’S, ALL MANUALS, 2-KEYS, CLEAN CARFAX

To me these cars still seem like they just arrived on the market, so it’s amazing to me that they’re priced below $40,000 now. For mid-range 3 series money, this is a lot more car and a lot more special than run of the mill 3er. If you really want to announce your presence in the office park, the Dinan exhaust will do that quite nicely for you. Long term the 6 speed manual is the option I’d choose. This car looks well kept and dealer serviced, so there shouldn’t be any surprises of any sort except for the face on that Porsche 911 Turbo driver as you out accelerate them. Downsides? Like all M5s, there don’t seem to be many – this is truly a car for most occasions!

Motorsport Mondays: BMW E92 M3 World Challenge

So you want to go the the race track, eh? I don’t blame you; I’ve been tracking cars for 15 years and went to the track with my father for years before that. It’s a fantastic experience, and addictive for most that are involved. It always seems to start off the same way, too – people come to the track with their daily driver, which is soon replaced by a much faster daily driver, which is then completely ruined as a road car in an effort to get the best lap times possible. Loud exhaust, uncomfortable seats, concrete suspension, ridiculous splitters that you leave on the curbs trying to get drive-up coffee, lots of attention from the local law enforcement who refer to you as “Mario”; if it hasn’t already happened to you, it surely will if you go to the track. This is, of course, not to even mention the expense of building a car to be a track weapon – if you don’t double your initial purchase price or more in modifications, you probably weren’t trying hard enough. That’s why it’s so appealing to buy a track car or – if you have the means – race car that someone else has already built and taken the depreciation bath on! But you don’t have to go all out and buy a full race team of championship winning cars – there are plenty of examples of “also rans” which would make a suitable track weapon for the weekend warriors. Such is the case with today’s example – an already fast car made much faster in the form of an BMW E92 World Challenge M3:

I’ll save you some calculator time; adding up the modifications and spares listed will exceed the purchase price of this car. Heck, as I’ve said with multiple other race cars I’ve written up, getting a proper engine built will set you back half of the purchase amount. This car is certain to be fast at the track, and is really ideally set up for racing though you could utilize it for DE events. In that case you’d likely need to add a passenger seat which would throw off your corner balancing, so keep that in mind. Being that this car came from World Challenge, it’s probably had some or lots of body damage, so it’s best to check the car for frame twist prior to purchase, but at the advertised price it’s hard to see how you could go wrong. At around half the going rate for a Porsche 997 Cup Car, this car offers most of the same performance and certainly more than enough for any given driver unless your name ends in Said or Auberlen. Keep it long enough, and it will even be eligible for some vintage events in the distant future. If you have the room (and a trailer) to make this happen, there’s no cheaper way to go this fast.

2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS

Even after eight years of being on sale, I still have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that Porsche sells a four-door, off-road vehicle. True, years ago the company built a diesel tractor, but for myself and others, the 911 will still be the quintessential Porsche. Still, the Cayenne is a perfectly capable vehicle in its own right. If I was going to own one, however, it would be this one, the GTS. Powered by a 4.8 liter, 405 horsepower V8, this beast was available with a 6-speed manual transmission, as we see in our feature car for sale in Arizona.

2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS on AutoTrader

This 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS AWD, 6 Speed Manual is perfect in every sense of the word. VERY RARE approximately 1 in 25 OEM versions of the Cayenne GTS were produced in the rare manual gearbox format. If you desire the functionality of a sport SUV with the exhilaration of personally commanding the delivery its 4.8L 405 hp and 369 ft-lbs. to the pavement through the famous Porsche 6-speed manual gearbox, this is your new vehicle. It has been meticulously cared for by the original owner. This Cayenne is gorgeous. All Porsche service by Porsche dealership. All GTS standard features plus much, much more.

Interior Feature Installed Options: Leather package (black) Full leather inside including dash and all doors, with full Alcantara headliner and Alcantara seat inserts ($3,170 factory option),PCM (Porsche Communication Management) w/ Navigation ($3,300 factory option),Bose Premium Surround System, 12 speaker ($1,690 factory option),XM Satellite Radio ($750 factory option),Blue-Tooth Interface ($1,431 dealer option),I-Pod Interface ($708 dealer option),Heated Front Seats ($690 factory option),Lighting Package/Memory Keys and Seats ($610 factory option),Moonroof ($1,190 factory option).Exterior Features Installed Options: Bi-Xeon Headlamps with washers ($1,560 factory option),Trailer Hitch ($630 factory option),Enlarged Rear Spoiler (STD, similar to Turbo),Full Turbo Fascia Kit (STD, similar to Turbo).Other Notables: tags current through April 2013 (Arizona), new Michelin Latitude Sport 295/35 R21 on Porsche GTS specific rims (also, perfect).

Bottom line, this vehicle is even better in person than in pictures or on paper. It will not last. Priced to sell at $53,950. You could pay $12,000 to $14,000 more for the same vehicle (if they had it) at the Porsche dealership for a “certified” pre-owned version, but my service records exceed the “certified” standards so why pay more? This GTS sells itself. Serious inquiries from qualified purchasers only.

Even though so few were made, I can’t help but think a Porsche like this might be a bit of a hard sell. Many hardcore Porsche enthusiasts don’t take too kindly to the Cayenne and those in the market for a luxury SUV wouldn’t want the manual transmission. Porsche has announced the second generation Cayenne GTS will not be available with a manual transmission, as only 3% of GTS buyers from the previous generation opted for three pedals. If you want an SUV but are looking for exclusivity, this truck might be the best option this side of a Lamborghini LM002.

Theme Week: 2009 Stasis Supercharged Audi R8

When ridiculous isn’t enough, sometimes you have to take matters in to your own hands.  That’s exactly what the previous owner of this car did.  Enter STaSIS Engineering, one of the premier Audi tuners in the world.  The STaSIS supercharger kit adds 120hp to the already impressive 420hp of the 4.2l V8, and all with a factory-matching 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty.  This of course doesn’t come cheap, the supercharger kit for this car is $30K…you read correctly $30K.

This Ice Silver Metallic R8 for sale in New London, CT is not for the faint at heart with 540hp, and 435lb/ft it’ll certainly plant you in the seat.

2009 Audi R8 on AutoTrader.com

Amazing Audi R8 4.2 Manual, STaSIS supercharger, STaSIS exhaust. This car is in show condition and has won many awards, many, many upgrades, navigation with CD changer, carbon fiber mirrors, side blade, spioler, front diffuser and more. This is a must see vehicle! Guarantee this special internet price by bringing a copy with you to our dealership. Satellite feature, Bluetooth wireless, daytime running lights, bi-HID Headlamps, side intrusion door beams, dual front knee airbags, LED daytime running lights, dual-stage front airbags with occupant sensing for passenger side, seat-mounted head-thorax side airbags for front seats, 3-point seat belts including belt tensioners force limiters, crash sensor including fuel supply shut off, battery disconnect, doors unlock. 4-wheel vented disc brakes, tool kit, electronic differential lock (EDL), Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, 4.2L DOHC FSI 32-valve V8 engine, Servotronic electromechanical power steering w/speed-dependent power assistance. Dry sump lubrication, front/rear 4-link suspension, Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, auxillary power outlet in trunk, auto-dimming rearview mirror w/compass, homelink garage door opener, leather/Alcantara seat trim, driver info system w/on-board computer, micro metallic gray trim w/aluminum accents, storage compartments in doors, 10-way power heated seats

At $100,000 this car is about $3,000 over average retail, but factor in the upgrades, that makes the price more than reasoneable, if you’re in the market for a modified super car.  The upgrades to this car are top quality, and with the STaSIS warranty, you know that you’re protected even though the factory warranty may be void.

With all of that said, would I buy this car?  In short, no.  This car was local to me, and was part of the VW/Audi scene here in New England, so I’m pretty familiar with it.  From what I could see, this car had a pretty rough 18K miles, being smoked in, and abused, not just driven hard, abused.  It’s certainly a shame, as no expense was spared in modifying this R8.  So if the history of the car is of no consequence to you, then this is a smoking deal on a true rocket ship.
