1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Let me start by saying that I do like this 911. I like it quite a bit actually. It’s a Black 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with Tan interior and 38,769 miles on it. It looks to be in very nice condition, the mileage is low, it appears well cared for, and the colors – while not bold – are a combination I enjoy on almost any car. Even the modifications look to have been carried out well and pretty thoughtfully and the ad states that all of the original parts come with the car. So if you want to revert it to full originality, or just change out a couple of things here and there, then you have that option. I imagine it’s quite nice to drive as well!

All of that is good and I’ll go into some more details below. The problem: price. High asking prices aren’t an uncommon thing in the air-cooled 911 world, but this one just seems so high that I’m not sure what to make of it. You should easily be capable of finding a good 993TT for this money. I do wonder if part of the issue is the recency of the modifications, all stated to have been performed in the last 1K miles. Is the seller simply trying to recoup all of that expense? It’s the only thing that would make sense, but as we know you’re not getting your money back on modifications. So we have a nice looking, but high-priced 911. I feel like I’ve been here before.

1990 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 16V

Much like the S4 I posted over the weekend, the Jetta GLI 16V is a car which on paper I should like very much. After all, I’m a huge fan of the same-generation GTI 16V, and the Jetta was little more than a trunk added to that formula. Underneath, there were almost no changes between the two. You got the same high-strung 9A 2.0 16V with Motronic fuel injection pushing 134 horses through that open-diff front end. Your only choice was a 5-speed manual, of course, and it was a close-ratio one – enjoy those highway speeds! Brakes were updated to 10.1″ and dual tailpipes emerged from the new ‘big bumper’ A2 refresh. Central locking and a cassette player were standard, while you could opt for many power options including windows, mirror, anti-lock brakes, trip computer, cruise control and of course a sunroof. The GLI also carried over BBS wheels from the pre’90 1.8 models, in this case the 15″x 6.5″ ‘RA’.

These items should have conspired to produce a deeply desirable product for me. And yet, somehow I never really took to the Jetta though many did. I suppose it’s the same as the 4000 quattro/Coupe GT fan bases. Rarely do they seem to cross over, yet there’s a mutual respect between them. I like the Jetta, and in the absence of the GTI it would probably be a great favorite of mine. It was aimed at being a more refined alternative to the racier hot hatch. But ultimately it falls second fiddle to the GTI, which always seems (and, arguably is) just that little bit more neat.

For enthusiasts, though, that means potential value. As GTI 16V prices climb steeply with no real relent in sight and few good examples hitting the market, you can get a bit of a value if you don’t mind the junk in the trunk:

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R

Green not your color? Well, if you are looking for something a little more sinister for a naturally sinister car, then maybe black can get it done. The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R has been a hit, probably even more so than people expected, and demand, along with prices, have reflected that. Rumor has it that production for the GT R would be limited to around 2,000 units, but of course those numbers can change if Mercedes feels the need. This GT R painted in Magnetite Black for sale in Florida actually comes in at one of the lowest prices I’ve seen a GT R for sale at and much cheaper than the green one I featured a few months ago. How much cheaper?

2003 Mercedes-Benz C320 SportCoupé

Remember when you could take people at their word? Yeah, me either. But you get my point. The reason I bring this up is because when someone tells you something about a car you hope you can take their word at it, but ultimately it is your responsibility to do your due diligence. Enter this 2003 Mercedes-Benz C320 SportCoupé.

As you might have noticed, this W203 is far from a stock car with quite a bit of modifications done to it. It has a wing, some 19 inch BBS wheels, a DTM-inspired splitter, a carbon fiber hood and of course some special paint. Inside, the seats have been redone with Mercedes logos stitched in them and if my eyes are correct, an original Xbox gaming system in the passenger foot well. At first glance, I thought it was just a modified car from a private owner. Then I read the eBay description and saw a story with the words ”McLaren” in it. Needless to say, my eyes lit up and I became very excited. Could this car really be associated with the F1 great? Then a few moments later I had to ask myself ”Why did McLaren want an Xbox in a C320 SportCoupé?”

Paint-to-sample Oslo Blue 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Vintage Porsche colors on modern Porsche models always attract my notice. That’s especially true with colors that Porsche only used for a short period of time, though I must admit in many cases while the color itself no longer was used other choices are so close to that original color that it’s pretty much still present in the lineup. That’s more or less the case we have here with this paint-to-sample Oslo Blue 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, located in Illinois, with 2,339 miles on it.

Oslo Blue is a color I love to see on the 356 and for me is one in a large number of really nice non-metallic blues Porsche has produced. If you scroll through those blues you’ll find quite a few that were similar. It’s not one of the pastels, but still brings with it plenty of brightness and in a nice rich deep blue. As an option on the GT3 RS it makes a wonderful choice.
