One of the things I love about the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is that it came in every shape and size. What I mean by that is that you could buy a sedan, estate, coupe and cabriolet. This is unique because it is the only generation that can boast such a fact. The prior W123 lacked a cabriolet and every generation after lacked the coupe and cabriolet. You might be saying that the CLK-Class is basically the E-Class coupe, but I don’t see it that way because the CLK was a mash-up of a parts both mechanically and cosmetically from the C-Class made to look like an E-Class, not a true E-Class coupe. Even when they literally changed the named to E-Class Coupe in the recent generations, it is still riding on a C-Class chassis. That leads me right into today’s car, a 1994 E320 Coupe up for sale in Connecticut, that has that classic facelift W124 look and checks all the right boxes if you are looking for a sleek and livable daily driver. The best part about it? It looks to be fully sorted and won’t take much to drive home with.

Every once in a while, eBay throw you a knuckleball – and this listing is more of a knuckleballer than you might expect. I usually search through chassis listings, and ‘Volkswagen Golf’ is usually on my list. This past week, though, an interesting ‘Golf’ turned up. What I noticed first was the wheels, which appeared to be OEM but of a variety I’m not familiar with. Wheels are something I take pretty seriously, so the wheels alone warranted further investigation. Looking closer, this ‘Golf’ was very strange. And, small.
Glancing from the screen towards my coffee, I needed to check if I was in some altered state. But no, it was the ‘Golf’ that was in an altered state, mostly because it wasn’t a Golf at all. It in fact was a Polo 1.2 TDi Bluemotion, and for some reason which I’m sure makes sense to someone, the seller not only has it listed on eBay as a Golf (probably because the ‘Other’ category is full of duds, mostly) but more perplexing, they’ve actually de-badged the Polo and added a Golf badge. Maybe they were tired of questions at the pump?

9 CommentsHere is a 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe, located in California, with just 22,598 miles on it. It comes from the latter part of 911 production in 1973 meaning it has the new Bosch CIS injection system rather than the mechanical fuel injection that had been used on all previous models. It is said to have recently been completely restored.
The very pretty exterior color is Dalmatian Blue, which I believe more commonly is known as Oxford Blue (Seeblau in German). It shows quite brightly here, perhaps a little brighter than other Oxford Blue 911s I’ve seen though I suspect that is down to the lighting of the pictures. Still, it’s a nice shade of blue. Here it’s contrasted with a Beige interior and I think the whole thing looks quite good. It’s priced quite high for a 911T, but with such low mileage I guess we have to expect sellers to be seeking a premium.

Comments closedIf you’ll allow me to indulge a little bit I’d like to present this…which is insane. Here we have one of the more unique ideas when spec’ing a Porsche. This Liquid Metal Chrome Blue 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder was built to replicate the look of the 918 RSR Concept, which Porsche showed at the Detroit Motor Show back in 2011. A lot of concept cars are conceptual for a reason, but the 918 RSR, since it was to be the racing version of the production car, was truer to the look of the real thing than some over-the-top concepts tend to be. Thus, why not go for that look? And they’ve done a heck of a job of it too! Even the interior color appears to replicate that of the Concept.
Of course, they aren’t identical. The RSR was a fixed-roof version of the 918 and the one we see here remains in the standard Spyder configuration. The aero isn’t quite as pronounced either, but this car was meant to be driven on public roads so we can excuse that. Oh, and it has been driven. This 918 has 10,363 miles on it!

Comments closedPerhaps I’m being harsh in my title. But I have to say, this listing annoys me for a few specific reasons. We’ll get back there soon. Predictably, as it did with Mercedes-Benz Pagodas, Porsche 930s, 80s BMW M products and the original GTI, the quick rising of selling prices for the Audi Quattro has continued to bring good examples to market. Where we used to wait seasons between seeing any at all, today you seem to be able to view at least one pretty good one on the market at any given time.
Today’s furthers the recent line of ’83s I’ve looked at. We saw the $59,000 ask on a modded L041 Black one. Recent bids only hit $33,000, which tells us more where market value lies. We saw more of a project a month later with the Treser’d LA5Y Helios example. At $25,000, it was one of the cheaper examples to come to market recently. Then just last week the stellar L97A Diamond Silver Metallic one popped up. Priced right in the middle of the two at $40,000, it looked like the one to buy of the three.
Today’s ’83 comes in a fourth shade available that year. LA3A Mars Red was shared with the A1 and early A2 chassis Volkswagen GTI and GLIs (along with a few others), but is less frequent to see on the Quattro than the color that replaced it in 1984 – LY3D Tornado Red. It’s more orange in tone and distinctive as a result. This particular example is also claimed to be completely original and from a single owner – something none of the others could boast. Priced at $36,900, is this the one to get as a collector?
